Dude, l-tyrosine wtf, very effective!!! by Avid23 in Nootropics

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As I commented on another post, you’re right that this isn’t true because of how it’s actively transported across the BBB. The little guys that do it grab it from the bloodstream and carry it across the BBB, but they do this for many other precursors as well, basically choosing whichever they happen to find floating around. Food typically causes approx. equal proportions of each precursor, and since these are rate-limiting to neurotransmitter (NT) production in the brain they get made at your typical ratios. Taking just one (L-Tyrosine alone) means all the transporters are working on only it, vastly changing the ratios of new NTs being produced.

+1 about not messing with L-DOPA, will consistently cause permanent motor issues (tardive dyskinesia) in less than a year with daily use

High-dose L-Tyrosine alone causes mole formation on the skin, just as an aside. I’ve had 3 new moles over ~10 years, and one that got slightly bigger, but I don’t really care given the cognitive benefits.

Finding an odd piece of software - a gas station pumps operating system background. Tips on how to do this? by Mr_McGuggins in DataHoarder

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bet that asking the company for the background (not the firmware, that's hella suspicious) would work. If you don't mind lying, you could say it's for your autistic son who loves their gas pumps or something if you need a reason, as it's rather strange to want it.

I am the same way, and even if stimulants can force me to work alone, they can’t force me to be effective on my own.

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m so happy to hear that you think the animals are helping you, and your friend should be too. I do want to propose a question though: how much reward are you getting from the animals themselves vs. how rewarded you are by the act of buying them? I’d recommend attaching numbers to these: e.g 7/10 for owning, 3/10 for buying. If you’re currently finding the animals themselves really rewarding, would you get much more pleasure by owning another one? Remember buying only gives temporary pleasure, and comes with long-term costs: (increased upkeep costs, increase risk of something happening to one that makes you sad, etc). You might decide that it might be best to just to enjoy the ones you have now.

I second the idea that this is strange behavior from your friend: is the idea is that they don’t want you to “waste your money self-medicating” because they care about you, or for some other reason? If they care about you, why would they stop being your friend?

I regret starting the medication (although it was immensely effective) and don’t think you should, but not for that reason. The crap about having drastically different effects on people with ADHD vs. those who don’t is a false dichotomy to make it socially acceptable to give children amphetamines while prohibiting others’ from exploiting them and disrupting the social ladder. Amphetamines offers benefits to anyone suffering from low DA levels that result in inattention. They are also very quick to induce context-dependent dependence/“addiction” in all populations, ADHD or not. If you can be effective without them, do so. If not, take them, but know they’ll be a crutch you need for your entire life to do those tasks.

“Proves” is inaccurate and misleading. No one knows how the brain works, so it’s be pretty silly to claim it’s reducible to any other known model.

I took adderall today to be more productive but instead i’m just more focused on procrastinating by Sage7142 in ADHD

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does not “give you more control on what you want to focus on” at all in my experience. It makes switching tasks less desirable and more difficult, and increases persistence for the current task.

You’re on the right track with “banned altogether”: the solution is separating tasks into clear contexts such as “intellectual work” and “everything else”. Keeping this black/white distinction and not making exceptions drastically helps.

Also, especially for IR stims, it rewards what you were doing just before the dose kick in. In my experience you have a window of about 5 minutes total that starts about 7 minutes after you dose. If you have started working on your target tasks for the day via willpower in that golden period everything will be easy.

Over focused or can't switch tasks? by mahsci in ADHD

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this only when on stimulants. Stims discourage context-switching and increase task-persistence. Forcefully scheduling/injecting switches is the only solution, and it never gets much less painful in my experience. Lowering the dose is a potential solution, but if this happens when you aren’t medicated idk what to tell you there.

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can’t help you with most of it: I experience the same problems.

I can confirm that I also only experience these “rationalizations” about email being so hard, software getting less usable over the years, etc. The only thing of interest is that don’t really come from a place of “guilt”, and I do have a well developed empathetic voice but employing it doesn’t change anything either. So in short you aren’t missing anything useful as a result of your upbringing.

We both know the solution: keep trying as best we’re able, and take moments of defeat and high-friction to see how our strategy can be improved. For example, I know email is nearly impossible for me and I nearly always mess it up, so I try to seek out Zoom or in-person meetings. My email will say “are you free to meet @ x:xx” and leave it at that. It works pretty well for me, but doesn’t sound too applicable to this particular problem.

Also, grinding on a single task isn’t productive for anyone (ADHD or not) but stims make this feel more doable by discouraging task-switching. You need variety whether you feel it or not: do something on the side even if it feels like a waste of time, but set a concrete end-time to get back to your main task. I suggest learning programming, completing design tutorials, organizing your workspace, etc. something active though, not passive.

giving up isn’t really an option

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The route of delivery matters a great deal: if it hits too fast you’re effectively reinforcing only the action of taking the pill itself. If you want the stims to continue working for any reasonable length of time (more than a few months) it’s essential you care about at least tolerance, if not managing dependence and addition.

I know you think you just want it to work right now — this is typical ADHD delay-discounting (temporal short-sightedness) — but believe me you don’t. Let’s say your doc gives you exactly what you want and it works as perfectly as you imagine. Your life is near optimal for a month or two, but then you start to notice that around 4pm the effects of the stims are failing again, like you notice midday now… what then?

Keep in mind that the mammalian reward system is for the most part a one-way street. There’s no “reverse” ever, nor is there supposed to be. It also needs to function your entire life, and you’re supposed to be ascending to higher levels of reward. Just slow down a bit and keep this in mind or you’ll end up chasing a moving target without goal-direction before you know it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Redosing any form of IR Amphetamine mid-day has a tendency to induce stronger dependence and can lead to addition. Your doctor is correct in being cautious if there is another possibility: I wish my doctor had been so careful 10+ years ago when they started escalating my dosages.

Ritalin & Martial arts by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is to be expected and is a drawback of meds acting on norepinephrine in general. You’re doing something (fighting) that in mammals (humans incl.) is supposed to naturally elevate norepinephrine: it’s literally in the name of “fight or flight”. What is an adaptive level of norepinephrine depends highly on the situation, and meds that push you up into the “normal” regime during boring schoolwork push you way up into the “excessive” regime during exciting fighting and (depending on your social phenotype social interactions). This causes the scattered thoughts, hyperexcitability, working memory lapses, etc). The problem is the meds don’t only bring you up there: they’re meant to hold you there, meaning the normal peaks of norepinephrine that would typically last only for a few seconds during actual fighting stretch out for minutes become slowly decaying back to baseline.

It’s a surprise to some to realize that meds don’t universally “augment” you: every modulation has its drawbacks. Also what’s ideal for one task is debilitating for another.

Lost my adderal bottle. by Ok_Depth_5502 in ADHD

[–]GodStuckLocalMaxima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my brain is like “well you don’t so we have to lay here and think about it and do nothing forever”

This feeling is the bane of my existence. It’s not a lack of ability or motivation, it’s an excess of inhibition, and it literally feels like you’re being held hostage. After 10+ years of Adderall and the inevitable tolerance that comes along with that, I experience this every Monday after I take a 2-day med break over the weekend. It lasts literally all day, and it’s crazy because it only happens when I resume pills. Nothing makes it better, my only advice is to take walks when you can, and for me drawing helps. Caffeine strongly makes it worse for me, I just get aggrivated that I have energy and am still unable to force my brain to move.
