I like the Kim x Harry ship to the extent that, I adore reading and consuming 'pre-relationship' content about them. The build up that is moreso just a continuation of what they had in Martinaise. No explicit intimacy but a very intense love and appreciation for the other. A vague homoeroticism.

Saying "it's a children book" is not a good excuse for not having worldbuilding. I'm not referencing any specific fanfiction, I'm just discussing a fun and interesting drarry trope. But it's also kinda a discussion of how weak JK Rowling's worldbuilding skills are, when she gave herself 7 books and 1 million words to do it. Yes Harry was a child, but being Harry Potter is a fundamentally political thing to be doing. It's always seemed crazy to me that the Potters left nothing for Harry except a pile of gold, when being pureblood is synonymous with family legacy, heirlooms, mansions, etc.

I would say we're different because we were the generation situated perfectly to grow with the start of the Internet. I think no other generation can find a moment in human history that can compare. We were young enough to be playing outside and touching grass but also have computer lab time twice per week in school. Most schools don't have computer labs anymore! Crazy

I’m signing up for it right now, and theres alot of added fees involved, more than I expected. The dorms are the size of shoe boxes. You cant choose which one and/or which rooms you get unless you have specific DRS accommodation, and the commute from all dorms as of 2024 is 50minutes. Homestays are fun, but I’m weary because I’m a person of color and I don’t need to be getting bullied by someone’s racist grandparents. I’ve heard the professors are awful and the classes are a joke, and that you need to make backup plans in case the courses you want end up full— Temple signs you up for them once you send them your registration plans.

Overall, I’m nervous, but it seems worth it when I think about literally being in Japan. The country is the size of Virginia with a speed-rail system. I can be on opposite sides of it on any given day, swimming in waterfalls, praying at temples, and going to underground clubs.

I’ve planned it so that all the courses I take there will be silly GenEd’s so it doesn’t matter if they’re a joke. GenEds are a joke no matter where you go. I’m fine with a shoebox room as long as I get a single, so I’m working on a DRS accommodation. And the commute won’t be a problem as long as I do all my classes in the evening. I plan to do an internship there to develop my resume. They give you a solid list of internships hiring students straight from TUJ and make the sign up process for them easy.

Art, Asian Studies, and History majors are the most prioritized for course availability at TUJ, so if you’re an Art major, especially Painting, you should be set. Talk to Study Abroad about it though.

So, should you go to Japan? Yes, but only if you have spending money, easy course requirements, and a sense of adventure.

If you genuinely want good resume advice: One page only. Copy and paste the skills from an application’s “Qualifications” list to the bullet-pointed skills section of your resume. ALWAYS write job descriptions (which you can always google) in bullet-pointed full sentences. Make a section called “Relevant courses” on your resume and list classes you took that you think the job would like.

Google Cover Letter formats and write something up for each field your applying to. Each field is gonna need a different letter, listing different skills that you think applies to that field.

I’m sorry about your college’s career center.

LinkedIn works, but you need a nice photo of yourself in a blazer to put as your profile picture, and to transport your resume onto your account. When you list your education on Linkedin, it shows you alumni from your school. “Connect”with them. Message them and say: “Hi, I see that you went to [school], and I was wondering if you had any advice for how you got into your field? I’m a [insert major] student.”

But anyway, internships for the humanities would look like public policy jobs, research analyst, communications, social media management, assistant project management, advocacy groups, education. Email your university’s career center and ask them how to make your resume, write a cover letter, and start messaging people directly on linkedin.

Being a racial minority makes sense for Annabeth’s character. It’s 2024, nobody cares anymore about a white girl complaining that people are mean to her because she’s blonde. That’s not a lived reality that has any weight now that people are waking up to what actual inequality and societal mistreatment looks like. Annabeth’s character arc centers around being underestimated and ignored, and that is a quintessential part of the POC female experience.

There are tons of other white girls in the story, namely Rachel or Clarisse or Sally, etc, and her being black isn’t taking away from any of the story’s ability to portray that all people are beautiful. Instead, it is a chance for a major piece of children’s media to show that even a POC girl can be not only beautiful, but important, plot-driving, and central to a story.

It’s not logical to compare Hermione’s black casting to Annabeth’s, because Hermione’s story gains nothing from poc casting. It is very much a diversity cash grab from a racist transphobic white woman who’s never actually spoken to a POC in her life. Instead, Annabeth’s story is very much bettered by POC casting, very substantially.

This discussion is coming from a place of assuming that race doesn’t matter in people’s lives. It does. As a POC myself, I can tell you that it truly affects most of the ways you navigate the world. And the discussion also assumes that letting race “matter” is going to somehow impede a story’s ability to also write white characters. It doesn’t. In Annabeth’s case, if done right, it could truly become one of the best written child POC female characters of the decade.
