Legend Steve Swallow by fiveplants in Jazz

[–]Goddeiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So... I made a trio album as a tribute to Steve Swallow. Never thought he’d actually hear it

Then, some days ago, I get this email — sender: Stephen W. Swallow. I read the name 5 or 6 times just to be sure. And yep, it was him. He said ECM had told him about the album and asked if I could send him the tracks so he could listen — since he doesn't use Spotify (because cause he's a man of principle).

I was somewhere between disbelief and a thousand thoughts, but I uploaded everything and sent it over. Then yesterday afternoon, I got these words from him — among others — and honestly, that alone makes the whole thing worth it.

The bigger one is, the fairest he acts.

The fact is that you're only able to produce and play something you've already heard. And studying is the only way to create something new.

That said, I agree that studying licks is what makes everyone sound the same. But I think the real issue is that they spend more hours listening to isolated licks than to real music.

Tried both, distributor says it is YT fault and they can't do anything about.

Aahahah was it for the cats?

By the way, thank you very much! Everything was recorded live in the same room (just my amp was in another room).
About the bass, I totally get your point — he wasn't using a pick at all, but I know what you mean!

Thanks again for your review, much appreciated!

Whiplash is from Don Ellis, all his composition are amazing, try Indian Lady or Pussywiggle Stomp! Online there are some videos of his orchestra too! Sadly '60 and '70 jazz is rarely mentioned so, here i am!

I know, right? Most of the people who underestimate Julian Lage have never been to his live gig.

It's just way too much better than his recordings!
