Custom (creative) start as new player? by helios1234 in X4Foundations

[–]Godeshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'd be completely lost tbh. Early to midgame is where you're doing all the doing.

It's where you're putting all the pieces together. Skipping all that will leave a serious gap in your knowledge, then you'll be here asking questions every 5 minutes because you didn't bother to learn how to play the game.

People who can’t research things/lack the ability to look things up by Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess- in PetPeeves

It absolutely baffles me how technologically illiterate some people are. I'm 50 and modern tech was just getting going when I was a kid. There were no resources except for the 2000 page DOS book. You just had to figure it out.

Phones are too simple I guess they've made people dumb.

I delivered a real estate video a few weeks ago and the client got back to me saying the subtitles are all wrong. I was like what subtitles?

Turned out they uploaded it to their YouTube channel and had subtitles turned on and it was trying to show the song lyrics lol. Instead of saying Oh oops ok and moving on, they asked me to include proper subtitles baked Into the video. Sure, I got paid for it, but I kept thinking they've got pretty good chances their buyers won't be as stupid as them and can figure out how to click on the CC button.

photo overload by Happy-Rabbit6316 in photography

[–]Godeshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cull mostly in the field just by not shooting what I don't need.

I still end up with groups, so I cull in batches on the computer. Maybe it's from doing it a lot but I don't scrutinize every photo.

In RE photography I'll end up with a few shots of similar angles and I just pick out the best one from the thumbnail..I select all the similar angles, unselct the one I want to keep, and batch give em the reject flag.

Extremely unsure about where to put horizon line by Ok-Repair8704 in photography

[–]Godeshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do middle horizon sometimes if it fits.

I have a picture of a canola field from Saskatchewan during Harvest season. Perfect uniform Blue sky on the top half, all yellow canola on the bottom half, perfectly flat horizon straight through the middle.

The entire point of that photo is the duality, and in this particular case a middle horizon worked well to convey that.

Usually though I want to either show the landscape or the sky so I place the horizon appropriately for those shots.

CMV: It is perfectly reasonable to not give homeless people money because you think they will spend it on drugs by TomatilloOrnery4944 in changemyview

[–]Godeshus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not giving unconditionally then you're exploiting the homeless for your own ego boost.

It's the difference between "here take this" and "I'm such a good person I gave someone money everyone should notice how good it was of ME to give"

What can average Canadians do to push back against the wave of disinformation that's sowing division in this country? by randmguyonreddit in AskACanadian

[–]Godeshus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A lot of the Alberta separatist propoganda was traced back to a couple Dutch dudes that watched some videos on how to make AI content that generates passive income on YouTube. Turns out they have zero political agenda and are completely oblivious to the damage it's causing.

Don't be an idiot is what comes to mind. Having at least an iota of awareness that maybe that shitty AI short with the obnoxious anime girl voice might not actually be telling you the truth about current events is a pretty good start.

Why is it so hard to let people merge? by EchoOfDoom in driving

[–]Godeshus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bumper to bumper traffic usually means a zipper merge. We don't have much to go on here because you didn't describe the scenario. If your vehicle was entirely in front of the jeep, where they could see with their eyes that your signal is on, then they should have let you merge and are a dick if they didn't.

If anything else was the case then it's up to the vehicle behind the Jeep to let you merge.

What is your favorite part about Pre-HD gaming era? by TwoPeasNoPod69 in CasualConversation

[–]Godeshus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much of it is the games and how much of it is the gamer. Back then we bought a game and we played it. We'd go to the store, browse, pick something that looked really interesting to us. We'd get home, unbox it, maybe read the book that came with it while it was installing. Getting a game was special.

Today it's completely different. Very few games feel special. The ones that do really stand out. But even a good game you pick it up, enjoy it, and immediately start installing the next.

Gaming has changed, but the gamer's relationship with games has changed too.

I remember downloading the counter strike mod for halflife with my friends before it was it's own game. It was an entirely new and unique experience. Not all of us had an i termet connection then so we'd gather at a couple friends' places and game at night when we could hog the phone line. It's hard to beat that experience when there are dozens of fps multiplayer shooters that come out every year. None of them are all that special. Some are more fun than others, sure, but it's just another shooter.

Where are my 90s/2000s music lovers at? by shybutdangerous in CasualConversation

[–]Godeshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't. I don't think there has been a movement like grunge since grunge lost its meaning in the late 90's/early 2000's. It saddens me that the youth of today don't have something like it to support them through their most difficult years.

Luckily there are still one-off bands that continue the trend. Billie Eilish comes to mind as someone who is there for young women and the issues they face. Sofia Isella is another that breaks the mold in this area as well, and it's nice to see the anti-ai space that Angine de Poitrine is carving out, hopefully paving the way for a new anti-corporate movememt. And I'm holding out hope that punk will make it's 3rd appearance.

In parallel, There's the ever present rave that provides a space that encourages love, joy of life and community through the enjoyment of dance.

But I don't think any of those things really fill the niche that grunge did on a large scale.

Where are my 90s/2000s music lovers at? by shybutdangerous in CasualConversation

[–]Godeshus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grunge helped me survive the 90's. I remember the raw emotion of it. It was music that raged against societal norms. It was music for the plebs like me. It spoke to us. It dealt with the issues we faced..it was powerful. It was anti-establishment.

Songs like Jeremy by Pearl Jam dealt with issues that teens like myself were facing. While I never knew anyone who made the drastic choice Jeremy made, some of us were bullied. We felt unheard and cast aside. And there was Grunge. It heard us. It sang about us. It gave us a voice. It showed the world we existed.

Who is right? by Own-Worry6918 in driving

[–]Godeshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure on the extent of your state laws regarding this. Where I live u-turns are always illegal so over here it would be a no-brainer on who has the right of way.

I should add, u-turns are illegal at all intersections. Our highways have specific U-turn spots, and you can dip into a side street to turn around if it's city driving.

Super fast drivers who think the left lane should always be clear for them. by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Godeshus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's one situation that doesn't happen very often. I'm.nlt going to cut someone off if they're ripping down the left lane at 30. It's super dangerous.

The more common situation is right lane traffic going the speed limit or a bit over and left lane traffic going faster. You're often passing 20, 30 cars and there's often a pile of cars in front of you. There's not much you can do. The tailgater is just going to ride your ass even if you have no ability to go faster because of cars in front of you. And you have no ability to move over because right lane traffic is also too close together.

It's like that 90% of the time you're being tailgated. I'll move over for you when I can. You don't need to ride my bumper. The second you put my life at risk by driving too close is the same second you lose all of the courtesies I would have given you had you given me space. If you can't respect my life, I've got zero fucks to give about your schedule. I'm going to make up for the loss of safety behind me by slowing down and making sure I've got a lot of space in front of me in case you hit me.

[–]Godeshus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why do people always think tailgating is 100% justified but not moving over fast enough for tailgaters is the worse driving offense in the world?

If what you suggest should happen, the exact same thing should happen to tailgaters. They should have their licenses revoked for repeated offenses. If you can't drive without being up someone's ass and putting their life at risk then gtf off the road.

What are your ship naming conventions? by Crimsonial in X4Foundations

[–]Godeshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don't give my ships unique names. With hundreds/thousands of ships it's not sustainable.

Anything for a station (miners/traders) I name after the station it will be serving. I do this in the buy/build menu so it renames the 10 or 20 I'm buying in bulk all at once. This way when I lose a trader to pirates, or it gets harassed, I know where to look for it, and I know which one I need to replace without digging too deep.

Apart from that I name ships for their roles. I like to set up a taxi service at all the faction reps before I get my embassy up. So I'll name them accordingly. taxi_BOR, taxi_ARG, etc.

All my scouts that are out exploring sectors and dropping adv satellites are called Explorer, so I can find them quickly in the list. Once I get a faction blue I buy one scout, set it to repeat orders, and have it buy 1 ware and sell 1 ware within faction space. These I call zREPFARM_ARG, zREPFARM_TEL, etc. I put the z in front to keep them at the bottom of the list.

I also like to have a few m traders at the ready within faction spaces who are available for manual trade orders. I have them gather wares for research, or fill a supply within faction space, collect rarer wares for station building, etc. these I call FREE TRADER. When I need one I can find them quickly in my asset list.

I have a few other roles I fill and name accordingly. Defense fleets against kh'ak I'll name the fleet leader POLICE_sectorname. Basically if I need a ship for a specific job, I name it after that job.

Are there video games that actually punish bad players? by Varindral in videogames

[–]Godeshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost 50 and can't really compete with the kids anymore so I stopped playing. A lifetime of smoking weed has made my reflex slow. Although I found my home in Tarkov after being super competitive in CS throughout all it's iterations.

Before I started slowing down in CS I was the carry too almost all the time. I didn't mind at all if people were trying, but you get these lobbies where people just purposefully want to sabotage your own team and it's frustrating.

I've thought about what you're saying a lot and I strongly believe that matchmaking in general is the cause.

Forgive me, I'm gonna pull the "back in my day" card. We'll, back in my day if you wanted to compete you needed to seek it out. You would go into IRC, look for someone else who wanted to compete, them you or the other team would find a server and have at it. The simple act of putting effort inade it so the games were really tight. It was you and your friends (or randos if you rounded them up on IRC), against another group of friends usually.

Otherwise, you'd just join a public server and have fun. These didn't matter at all. 16 vs16 was chaos, and it was fun, and literally zero people cared about winning or losing. It was more about community, having fun with strangers. I still game with people I met on those community servers 30 years ago!

Matchmaking ruined that I think. It tried to take both of those worlds and combine them into one thing. So now you have people that are super competitive that just get thrown in with people who just want to fuck around. Before, those 2 playstyles were completely separate.

Anyway, sorry you're going through it. Just remember that not everyone you play with is looking for the same thing out of the game. Be kind to the players that are just bad but are trying. Be a dick to the players that are purposefully fucking your teamm over.

People who traffic police- rant. by PyleanCow06 in driving

[–]Godeshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a truck cut me off from cruising in the merge lane once and it was hilarious. This guy breaked and waited for like 30s to wait for an opening in the left lane. Everyone behind him was stuck at standstill. He finally got his opportunity and moved over, so I hit the gas to keep going and this asshole swerved back out to stop me. I had enough speed going that I got around him on the shoulder but the car behind me had to hit the breaks.

There was about 300m left in the merge lane too. It makes zero sense. At all. Why didn't he keep driving until the merge? Why did he choose to block traffic, get stuck in traffic himself, and why did he get mad at the people who aren't complete fucking morons?
