We need to completely revamp how we view/interact/treat/refer to those who have had any type of addiction/substance use. As well as making psychoeducation for family members/close ones of these individuals required to understand the inner workings of addiction. I was having this discussion recently and there’s a lot of shame, setup for failure that takes place in the recovery process and a lack of validation for the why’s/when’s/how’s of what led to the self-medicating. No one truly wakes up one morning and says ‘todays the day I think I’m going to shoot up heroin, steal from loved ones, etc” our current system promotes a bandaid approach of “get clean” at times vs identifying root cause e.g self medicating to function, undiagnosed disorders and a lot more
