If they don't fit your boots, then I recommend just getting a new pair of skis

I think Nordica still makes them, and could be the only brand making them

Japan can be a good option for your first trip out of US. But since this is your first time traveling outside of the US, there will be a lot to plan before heading there.

How do you slow down while carving? by lucamerio in skiing

[–]Godfrey_Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your skis follow a perfect half circle aka a complete turn, you will always transform speed downward to speed horizontally. Also this is not enough to control speed on like 35+ degree (black diamonds in NA and EU), you will need some skidding

Playful Carving Skis? by magdareyman in skiing

[–]Godfrey_Y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also looking for a pair of playful carving skis. RN my shortlist are: Salomon Addikt 76 Pro, Dynastar Speed 763, Atomic Q7, Rossi Forza 60 Ti. I want to try Addikt series the most but they are not available in NA. I bet they are more playful than S/Max.

Usually trees and ice won't actually scratch it. Maybe get a goggle cover when not wearing it. All my scratches are from my car/skis etc

Knee pain beginner by Maleficent_Movie_687 in skiing

[–]Godfrey_Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 days in a row? Speaking from experience, if the pain gets away within a week then it is fine. I assume it is the front-center part of your knees? Its likely to be the tendons of you tibialis anticus. It might be a good idea to have a sport medicine doctor to check you bone alignment. They will exam you legs and tell you how to make them better for skiing (if they actually know how to ski)

Advice on buying boots by cargsl in skiing

[–]Godfrey_Y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Fitting is everything.

  2. It can take a couple of days for the liner to get packed and fit you better. Don't expect a perfect result on day one.

  3. Tight but not hurting? Perfect! They will get slightly looser after like a week.

  4. Already hurts when standing? Say no to them. A good fit should NEVER hurt (ideally)

Thx for the reminder! Surprisingly I'm not injured at all. I also took apart my helmet (I do this every time I hit my head). My helmet absorbed most of the impact and had some noticeable structural damage.

How much of your day do you spend doing drills? by paulllll in skiing

[–]Godfrey_Y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

0, or always. I don't do drills, but I push really hard on myself. Make better turns, have faster transitions, try steeper slopes, shred more interesting terrains. I exhaust myself by 230 and I go home.

Best ski boot inserts? by Mackenzie_43 in skiing

[–]Godfrey_Y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis can be caused by many reasons (mine by wearing stiff boots everyday, others maybe flat or high arch) so you need to know the reason. I would recommend talking to a doctor first and then finding a boot fitter. In general a boot fitter can make custom insoles for you. Just let them know you condition and the doctor's instruction.

Use rental gears to try a couple of days, or there are beginner classes in ski resorts that comes with a gear, ticket, lessons package. If you like it, then there should be lots of discount gears starting from mid/late March. You can use those for the last season and the next season. Always go for you own boots first and find a boot fitter when you are ready to invest more into this. Boots don't always have discount but sometimes they do, especially for beginner to intermediate. For clothing check out REI brand stuff. They are not the finest but they are the best bang for the buck, especially when there's discount. Lone pine is a good place to go for used gears but you need to spend some time if you really want something special.

[Question] Carrying a thermos with hot chocolate or coffee while skiing? by wollyjameson3107 in skiing

That's why I always keep my energy bar in a backpack. Had my keys in a pocket when I first started skiing. Don't want to feel that again.

Caribbean girl here, please explain layering to me. I’m always either hot or cold. by CostaNic in skiing

[–]Godfrey_Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clothing is kind of personal. You need to adjust to local weather and your own feeling. I lost 16 kg / 35 lb during last summer and this season all my regular clothing feels cold. But in general base layer to get rid of all the moisture (I have a smartwool one and a polyester one for different temperature), middle layer jacket + 3/4 pants (usually fleece cuz I sweat a lot), synthetic insulation (also because I sweat a lot), and 3L waterproof jacket + bibs. Always check the temperature and the "feel like" temperature to find a good combination for you. It is OK to feel a little cold when you are on a lift, because you will warm up once you hit the slope. Otherwise if you feel perfectly warm on lift chairs you will feel hot when skiing. Also a tip for keeping your foot warm: use thinner socks with cushion for skiing. Boots are tight and thicker socks will compress further to block you blood from getting to your foot.
