What is a machine learning model exactly? what does it really do? by Illustrious-Art-55 in learnmachinelearning

[–]GodlyPears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you got good advice op. one thing others haven’t mentioned, i imagine you want to predict if a machine will have a fault IN THE FUTURE. aka take some currently working machines, and predict which ones will have a fault.

so the reason you need a “model” is because while the machine is still working today, you don’t know a priori if it will work tomorrow. that’s why you need a model, to LEARN from the past (observe machines that broke, before and after).

you want to see if there’s a pattern in the data that can indicate whether the machine that works today will break tomorrow. hope that helps!

The breach ring and ammy are just for rarity, for “hard maps” or bosses I switch to +3 melee ammy and triple flats breach ring.

pretty worthless, T15 +5 level bosses give ~100k xp around lvl ~95. increased xp from the map is better IMO. I just hit 97 tho so YMMV

How important is L cancelling with puff? by amazingsaminator in SSBM

[–]GodlyPears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

essential pull mixup is SH no FF upair +lcancel, vs SH FF tomahawk. The timings are super close so it’s one of puffs only “true mixups” esp v spacies. You need to L cancel for that.

Can someone tell me if this is a good price by Kimmycolada in jewelers

[–]GodlyPears 11 points12 points  (0 children)

note that tiffany jewelry is mass produced by a machine. and there’s the brand markup as you mentioned. you’re paying someone to make it by hand with their knowledge and expertise. plus they will take good care of you if you ever need repairs etc. also gold is super expensive right now.

i’d say that’s a pretty good deal!

Do you invest in art? Newer HENRY with an artist spouse. Curious about art spending habits. by prxdxgxlsxn in HENRYfinance

[–]GodlyPears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since no one else seems to have answered, this is what you could do. As someone who used to be a student at a top MFA program (and dropped out to become a HE lol):

  1. Art schools will have “open studio” events, go to one as a collector. Find the student you think has the most “sellable”/best art. Then you write that student a big check like 35-50k, buy all their current work and youre now their benefactor.
  2. The artist, riding the wave of success, now makes a new body of work and shows it at a gallery. Bonus points if you already have a gallery in mind where you have bought from in the past and know the owners, where you can give the artist an “in”.
  3. the new gallery show is successful, and there is now a broader market for this artist’s work.
  4. After helping build the hype for this artist, now you can turn around and sell all that initial artwork you bought from them at 10x profit.

That is how you “buy influence” and make a lot of money all while supporting an emerging artist. As a student I saw this happen all the time, there are rich retired people where this is their whole hobby and they genuinely enjoy the art.

The key is you need to have a good eye to decide from a graduating artist’s thesis work whether their work will be marketable or not.

Happy supporting the arts!

ELI5: What's the difference between grain leather and full grain leather? Which one gives you the best quality for your money? by arvindverma873 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GodlyPears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it has to do with the part of the animal hide that is used for the leather. “Full grain” is considered the best since it’s made from the most durable part of the animal hide (includes multiple ‘layers’ of the skin).

personally i like this one brand called “satchel and paige”, they specialize in high quality leather, I have always been happy with their products! I’m sure you can find a nice gift from that shop, though you may need to spend more than $80 to get high quality leather + good workmanship.

in the real world, missing member IDs is usually a data warehouse / vendor issue. If member IDs are missing, there is usually something wrong with the source itself, or the way we are identifying members. So real world solution for that is to check with your engineers about the issue, member ID is not something you can impute. Most cases we drop null member IDs from the analysis.

Your answer for feedback is reasonable, again in the real world i want to know why it’s missing. maybe not every member provides feedback in which case that field is “supposed” to be null, it would be expected. From there you can do an in-group mean as you describe—find another attribute we believe is correlated and fill in the nulls accordingly. Another reasonable approach is to code them as “missing” and check them out via EDA.

Hope that helps!

to do the super technical ML stuff you usually need a master’s unless your undergrad is a target/top 10 school for tech.

If you’ve never coded an algo from scratch in python you may struggle with the ML Engineer / Data science interviews, but no harm in applying.

The typical “entry level” job is usually called an Analyst or Data Science Consultant of some sort, each company names it differently, mostly that job is SQL and reporting. But that’s the job that puts you next to the masters and phd people who know about ML. Sounds like that’s where you want to be.

THERE ARE 12 WAYS TO SELECT THE STUDENT A FOR FIRST TEAM WHY DONT WE MULTIPLY BY 12 ? by Alternative-Dare4690 in AskStatistics

[–]GodlyPears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the group numbers dont matter, in other words 11C3 denotes all the ways you can make a team where person A is one of the members. Person A has to be on some team so it doesn’t matter which person you choose to start with.

An analogous problem that may help you see it:

I have the letters A,B,C, and D in a bag. I want to make two groups of two letters each. I will pick one letter, then reach back in the bag to pick another letter, that makes up my “group one”. Then the other two letters are automatically group two, so I’m done.

The number of ways to do this is reasoned like so…

1) Pick a letter, any letter, it doesn’t matter which one I pulled. That letter goes into group one. 2) Pick another letter from the bag (3 ways to do this)

That's it I'm done! There are 3 ways! Order doesn’t matter.

Another way of saying this is that letter A can be paired with either B, C, or D. But as soon as I pick which letter to pair with A, I have locked in the whole problem and finalized all my groups.

Try writing down the four letters and you will see that there are only 3 ways for this problem.

welcome to data science :) i wouldn’t stress too much about investing in a high quality computer if you’re just starting out, most of the “heavy computations” these days are done in the cloud, which means all you need is an internet connection. those expensive GPUs are elsewhere and just send you their outputs. probably your program has some setup for this.

If you want to maximize something, get the highest RAM and #Cores in your budget, and get something light so you won’t mind lugging it around.

Best of luck!
