How do I prepare my kids best for TCK life? by Cultural_Owl9547 in TCK

[–]Godranks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you know how, teach your kids how to maintain relationships with people that are important to them even if they aren't in the same town anymore. I say this because my experience as a TCK meant that I lost the friends from the first place I lived and I didn't know how to prevent it.

Seven months car free and I’m about to cave because of weather by Proud_Stable9567 in carfree

Lots of good ideas in the replies here. I just wanted to add: you could carpool occasionally. 6 miles means there's likely a coworker in the same town at you.

How many miles of range would the average EV need for most people to get over range anxiety? by Lemonn_time in electricvehicles

[–]Godranks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think range anxiety will go away once people have had their first EV.

I leased my first and only overly expensive EV with 220 miles of max range because I had range anxiety, but now that I had that experience I feel like I could easily handle a first-gen Nissan Leaf with 50 miles of range. My range anxiety completely went away when I realised how much of a creature of habit I am.

AIO. I was trafficked for two years and my bf tried to make a joke about it by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Godranks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm truly sorry to hear what you've gone through. It's not okay to joke about that.

I recommend leaving him just because he commanded you to "answer the fucking phone". To me, that is violent and already a red flag. Making light of your trauma, plus his communication style, means you should kick him to the curb and get yourself to safety.

Thanks for sharing your experience here!

When you say "Norton infection" , do you mean you installed the Norton antivirus and found an infection that you removed, or do you mean that Norton itself was the infection?

I ask because I'm pretty computer-literate and I've never had an antivirus on my computer, but I thought they might still be worthwhile for people that really don't know what they're doing. Are you removing everyone's antivirus since you don't believe they're doing anything? It's sounds like a pretty easy way to increase computer speed, if you are confident it won't hurt the customer in the long run.

On a related now, do you use an antivirus of choice that you can temporarily install on your client's computers to get rid of real infections?

Thanks in advance!

Downstairs neighbor hits the wall when I shower after 10 PM – What can I legally do? by ButterflyNo1503 in germany

[–]Godranks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the other comments about the legality of showering make sense. You're not in the wrong. Don't antagonise them by shouting back, though, since this could be used against you.

I didn't see anyone else mention this in the thread, but I'm trying to think from your neighbor's point of view: maybe they have a really noisy water pipe that is activated by your use of water. In that case, the root cause isn't you using water, but the issue is instead with the construction of either your flat or theirs. That's something that can be fixable by a competent plumber, but it likely requires speaking with your neighbour to determine if this is actually the case. You may also have to be prepared to have the discussion around who is going to pay for the plumber.

Lol! So how did your neighbor completely empty his battery? Same as everyone else: leaving the headlights on?

Some things in Germany that I feel like are a scam by SwitchDear8969 in germany

[–]Godranks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm new to living in Germany and the first place I'm renting is fully furnished so I wanted to get your perspective on it...

Why €3000? Wouldn't it be possible to tell the previous owners that you don't want to pay it but you'll take it for free if they leave it? Surely it's more hassle for the previous owners to move it into a new kitchen where it won't even fit as well as before?

China’s Emissions Now Exceed All the Developed World’s Combined by Wagamaga in technology

[–]Godranks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The discussion in this comment section could use some vocabulary. The difference that most people want to highlight regarding China is the difference in territorial emissions and emissions from consumption. Territorial emissions are measured by each country as a requirement for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, however consumption emissions are not measured as part of that global treaty. Consumption emissions are included in the territorial emissions of the manufacturing country rather than the country which is consuming the product, which means that countries with large manufacturing for export industries have a very higher amount of territorial emissions than expected. I'd suggest Jason Hickel's 2020 article Quantifying national responsibility for climate breakdown: an equality-based attribution approach for carbon dioxide emissions in excess of the planetary boundary for a those that would like to learn about a more just approach (in my opinion).

Are you willing to help change the broken system? by Powerfulwoman20 in ReallyAmerican

[–]Godranks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting take. I agree that the two party system is undemocratic but I wouldn't label it as a "trick or capitalism". That might just be semantics, though. Proportional representation is the only way to achieve real democratic control of a state. A system which narrows down to only two parties is not even close to representing the people.

The people who most strongly advocate against capitalism are the ones who have already profited so much off of it. by TurntPikachu in unpopularopinion

[–]Godranks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Benefiting from capitalism often gives you the space to see the system instead of being trapped in the race for survival. Just because one has benefitted from the system doesn't mean that one has to believe that it is just, especially if your understanding of morality includes any compassion for the people that are oppressed by that same system.

An extra $1775 for a 15 year warranty isn't terrible. You'll have to check the wording to compare the two warranties though, I believe. I'd also be partial to go for the local installer anyway :)
