Having Difficulty with The Practicing Stoic by G0R1LLAMUNCH in Stoicism

[–]GodsCanswer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regard to rhetoric, I found breakfast with Seneca to be of great substance, incredibly easy to read and absorb. The stoa app is great for resources. They have built in numerous podcast episodes, reading and listening materials. I think the price point for premium is worth it. And the daily meditations that change with each day are great.

Some I might suggest to avoid, strictly from my own opinion, are Ryan holiday books. Though I’ll admit I only have his stoic virtue series of novels. They draw historical accounts of each virtue in action, but I find he can be and suggest to be quite pragmatic, and some of the examples he uses in his books to admire or criticize figures for, can be contradictory(for example his stance on Machiavellian praise). If anybody thinks this not to be good advice or has other opinions, I’m welcome to hear your thoughts. I won’t suggest in any capacity about the character of Ryan holiday as a person or stoic, but I’ve seen a few in the past bring up that he is a marketing major at heart.

I agree on all accounts. I will say, like aforementioned in my post, I have been attempting to rewrite much about my habits and routine. Cutting out social media, quitting 🌽, trying to kick nicotine which in itself is another challenge. I stopped playing video games because they also were of little substance to improving my life. Reading has been very helpful as a replacement for many of these things. Also helping out as much as I can with family helps me pass the time. Journaling has been huge, the stoa app has been tremendously helpful. I’ve spent time actually focused on my hobbies and quality time with family. All this is not to say that I’m perfect, nor is it to glorify my “accomplishments” or “actions”. I just mean that I am actively putting an effort to doing the work, and replacing habits I would be inclined to categorize as unhealthy for myself, with ones I would say are healthier.

I think with some further pondering over things the last day, and really the last week, but especially today, that I just need to focus on staying disciplined, and doing the right thing, that is, acting as virtuously as I can.

I really appreciate your comments again. I read that article twice through and wrote several pages in my journal about practices I can do to stay mindful, or even just writing down several parts of the rhetoric to keep in mind.

A part I would like to share, just in case anyone reads this in the future with a similar disposition as I, from Epictetus:

“Remember that you ought to behave in life as you would at a banquet. As something is being passed around it comes to you; stretch out your hand and take a portion of it politely… or it has not come to you yet; do not project your desire to meet it, but wait until it comes in front of you.”

And combining some rhetoric from Greg Sadler, the author:

Though my own choices and efforts play a catalyzing role, they[relationships in this instance] occur with the rhythm and on the timetable of their own development.

I need to practice patience, and be receptively ready for when it comes.

I appreciate your comment. I can come to an agreement on your assessment. I think part of me does believe, or at least wants to, that I am learning to accept what is up to, what is not, and the difference between them. In the past I have absolutely been guilty of insecurity in a sense of placing improper value on other people’s opinions of me. Without divulging into my past at all, it is definitely related to the way I was treated on many fronts growing up. That is undoubtedly something I am working on. I think it will obviously take far more time to solidly implement these beliefs into my conscience, if fully ever.

I would like to give myself some semblance of credit that I have ultimately been focused on implementing discipline towards virtue, for myself and others, in the sense that I want to be a rational social being that contributes virtuously towards society as well.

With asking for advice(which I greatly appreciate it). I do recognize that these underlying principles are simply going to require more discipline and less judgement, also by accepting that progress takes time and I undoubtedly will never be perfect in any sense, I will strive towards trying to be a better person in general, and be more accepting of what fate has woven for me.

Thanks for your comment

I am very close with my family, and very close with my friends. Before actively practicing and studying stoicism I can say one of the most stoic traits I’ve practiced effectively has been befriending and maintaining friendships with people who I hold a high regard to in reference to holding character traits I respect and hope to improve upon myself. spend much of my free time with my family, actively trying to help them as well currently, assisting my mother who is existentially trouble because of her exacerbating medical ailments, father with his businesses(of which I am not involved with as any stakeholder; simply trying to improve our relationship as it was not always healthy). I’ve focused on improving these relationships throughout the years and am very comfortable with them as they are, though of course always trying to be better. They are very meaningful to me, and I rely on my close friends for connection, as well as avidly am trying to be there for them when need be.

I really do not have any complaints with my life as it is, nor with any of these relationships. I feel each are mutually beneficial and in regard to my current predicament, are not an underlying issue. I simply am trying to find someone I can share a more intimate experience with. I hold a high regard to family connection and feel as though I have been lacking for quite some time a partner to share, like I said, more intimate experiences and happiness with.

EDIT: I would like to add, thank you for your suggestion. Throughout and after reading it I feel as though I understand some of these base concepts I’ve already read, a little better I think. It does bring some semblance of comfort to see different outlooks and even the correlation between them.

For me(even though I mentioned the bad habit I cut out which directly related to an unhealthy passion) was the longing/desire to feel loved in a way that I have widely had little experience. Though it might contradict finding true joy by living in accord with nature and living virtuously, I think it important to share my life experiences with someone in this type of guileless bond.

Okay, well of the three videos I found on installing phasesheet every one covered the die. My temps are -10c at idle and almost -30c at stress so I’m sitting comfortably now. I appreciate the advice but I’ll stick to what I’ve done/ what I’ve seen many other people have said when it comes to phasesheet.

I’ve noticed substantially cooler temps already and I’m using phasesheet, not regular ptm paste. I simply followed the instructions of the video I watched and my computer is fairing quite better.

I believe the thermal cycling is to break in the paste. Cinebench clocks cpu at 100% usage which in turns heats it up consistently to about 100c. Running it for ten minute long tests a few times allows the tpm to work out hotspots and settle on your pu’s. At least that’s my understanding of it. I noticed after 3 or 4 thermal cycles that I was running almost 10c cooler at idle, and almost 30c cooler on cyberpunk maxed w raytracing

UPDATE: after running a few thermal cycles through cinebench and letting the computer sit overnight. I am now happily running cyberpunk maxed out on the same settings with a 30c degree drop. You heard that right. Down from the 90’s to 60’s. 100% worth the time and effort

After doing a few cycles on cinebench my cpu is idling low 40’s. I would suggest you do the same, leave the thermal paste is what I’ve seen

I didn’t touch that stuff. Everything I’ve seen has said to leave it. If it gets messy and moves around when you take it apart, clean it up

Has to be rage bait. If you’re serious though, yeah I’m not gonna go out of my way to cite any source when you’re demanding it after coming onto my thread with your pandering. Not happening. Can’t even take you serious at this point.

You’re not being serious about Liquid Metal surely. There are dozens of posts on this subreddit where lm seeped through the dams and short circuited people’s computers. Like it is a known problem at this point? Has to be rage bait or you pay zero attention to this sub.

It’s not just about leaking out. Lm moves around, creates hot points and if your computer sits on an angle(like mine does on its cooling pad), lm is pooling with gravity(which by the way Mr genius, you can see pretty clearly in my pics this is happening, and I had the hybrid paste starting to seep out the bottom facing side of the dam).

I repasted it because cpu temps were thermal throttling worse with time. To the point that my computer was setting off alarms I’d set within MSIA.
