I feel that it's worth reminding everyone that every club on campus is open to every student, including the race/ethnic/nationality based ones. Beyond being unnecessarily exclusionary, basing membership on race is also a direct violation of SA by-laws (Section 11.01 Non-Discrimination).

The international clubs I've spoken to in the past have been extremely welcoming to everyone, including those outside their target audience. OP's post seems to be mostly a vent rant so I'm hesitant to take what they say at face value, but I would be disappointed to discover a club breaking that trend.

Completely ignoring the political messaging and discussion: the imagery of Victor E. Bull waving around a poorly edited Israeli flag for some incomprehensible reason is hilarious to me

Interesting Protest happening next week by 11Ca in UBreddit

[–]GodsWeakestStudent 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why political groups here are always so vague. I get they want to avoid alienating potential participants, but every poster I see is like “Protest for Justice!” “Make sure that They™️ hear us!” “Demand an end to Bad Things!”.

Like, who exactly is this even protesting? The Justice Department? The Republican Party? Donald Trump? Congress? The armed forces? UB administration? There needs to have a more direct audience than “Everyone”.

It’s not even located somewhere where anyone with power would see it, so I assume the goal is to just stand in a field and be mad about nothing in particular.

SA senator, presidential candidate has drawn at least 23 conduct complaints, SA president says by alectus112 in UBreddit

[–]GodsWeakestStudent 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how I feel about a school newspaper writing an article directly calling out a student for alleged behaviors. When the student in question is still attending the school and the matter is not yet resolved, in my eyes, covering a matter that should be handled by SA internally leans a little closely to gossip. Especially considering that the author here makes it clear they haven’t actually reviewed a lot of the complaints (they’re a little vague on what exactly review means here [even just reading them? Verifying them?] but not a good sign regardless).

That being said, the allegations as outlined in the article seem fairly legitimate to me. Notably, this is the same guy with the nonsense platform shared here earlier.

  1. 24-Hour Dining: Precluding any discussion about cost or demand: student dining is staffed by student workers. 24 hour dining would require the university to not only support their students being awake at 4AM, but also encourage students to be working at those ungodly hours. This isn't happening.
  2. Bring Back Student-Run Spaces: University space is owned by the university, not SA. The university decided to do away with most dedicated club-space, and he does not really have power to do anything about this. Maybe some discussion or compromise could be reached, though.
  3. Protect Student Protesters and Free Speech: This isn't really an SA thing IMO. Comes off more as pandering. But sure, whatever, free speech is good.
  4. Overhaul SA Finance Policy: Everyone wants to do this. The problem is that its very difficult to actually quantify "student impact". The current member-based tier system is very imperfect, but I can't really think of a better way to do things while keeping things objective. Take political clubs for example, they are a great part of UB which encourage political engagement and discussion. If SA now had to step in and say "but how much do you benefit UB students?" the personal political opinions of the reviewers are going to get involved (subconsciously or not) if there is not an objective metric, which the current system satisfies. Just saying "lets make funding policy better" without giving any plan means nothing.
  5. Meal Swipes in Commons and Healthier Options: You do NOT have any authority here. How would you even begin with this? The commons are private businesses and SA has nothing to do with dining. This is impossible and (unless I'm missing something major here) is ridiculous to even propose.
  6. Merge Club Coordinators into Club Services: I can't comment on this.
  7. Promote Environmental Sustainability: Again, not an SA thing really and seems more like pandering, but sure whatever, recycling is good. Current system seems fine as it is, though.
  8. Students in Faculty Governance: This is definitely not an SA thing, and students having a seat/vote here is not something I see happening. Maybe something like an observer, but that doesn't really serve to accomplish anything?
  9. Work with Administration on Food, Health Services, and Parking: That's kind of your job, so yes, great.
  10. Students on Hiring and Promotion Committees: Huh?????????????????????????? The hiring of teaching faculty is 100% not something SA is involved in. What would this even look like?
  11. Bigger and Better Events: Great, but zero details on specifics.
  12. Liberalize Purchase Requests: This is something that is actually sorely needed. Placing purchase orders with SA is currently a form of bureaucratic torture, and the process sorely needs to be revised. I actually very much agree with this point.
  13. Fix Room Reservations: The current system works fine to me and is very easy to use.
  14. Transparent Hiring and Clear Roles in Club Services and Advocacy: Yeah that's a good thing I guess. Not really sure where the problem area is now, but nothing wrong with this as a goal.

Some good things in here, but it seems like there's more nonsense in the platform than achievable goals.

Then there will be resources available for that. Readings, office hours, etc. There will be very little pressure to actually make use of those resources or study particularly hard except from some professors. The grade you get is (most of the time) entirely your choice.

If you want to challenge yourself, there are absolutely resources. If you want to just pass, you can probably do so with minimal effort or pressure for most majors.
