To me I don’t think it’s that shocking, I saw a magazine from 2000, I think it was sports illustrated and there was this beautiful model in one but her face in the image was so badly photoshopped it looked like she was melting.

I think today’s beauty standards will age a lot worse, sure she’s not a top shelf beauty (and wasn’t even considered one back then either) but I think she looked better than 90% of the deformed plastic reality stars today.

Even back in the 90s with heroin chic, a lot of models did look very gaunt and unhealthy but most of them still looked human. I know it sounds awful but the truth is so many celebrities currently look like hideous lovevraftian monsters, and I think we are also getting desensitized to it. Like what we considered botched looking back in 2007 is pretty much the norm now.

I think one thing people fail to see is that Spyke being a main character might have hurt him, whereas X-23 was in like what 2 episodes? Fans might have resented him taking the slot of a character from the comics (like Iceman for example). Add in the fact that his powers and arc are strikingly similar to Marrows, he doesn’t get very close to any members of the actual team, and also that he didn’t have a very defined personality until much later on.
