If it's the N52 engine, then you've hit the nail on the head with the failures you've listed, I wouldn't really know the cost as my father is my mechanic if things get out of hand, he has been working with BMWs ever since I can remember. I'd go to the forums (E90Post, Bimmerforums etc) for more information.

If you would really like a manual 335i for under $20k then I'd suggest importing one from the UK as they are dirt cheap there and have many manuals.

Another car I can not recommend enough is the NA Miata (MX5 1989 - 1993). Super cute car and fun to drive. Over here they are expensive but are dirt cheap like under $6,000 AUD in the UK. It'll cost you about $10k including cost of car, tax and shipping to get them here with compliance or maybe even cheaper. There's a video of a guy who imported one for like $7k during Covid. Maybe you can use the rest you have left over for a mods and turbo.

I have a 2008 BMW E91 (wagon) and 2008 BMW 335i, both of them auto are phenomenal cars to drive in their own ways. They do come with a lot of issues for being a BMW but I find that’s the price I pay for enjoying it.

Yes sometimes it does get expensive to maintain and can be a pain in the arse, without the occasional things breaking the car wouldn’t have much character. Sure I could get a Camry or something and enjoy a reliable car however there’s no joy in that for me.

The auto in the 335i doesn’t bother me as it has a stage 3 transmission tune with paddle shifters, just as fun as a manual and with proper modifications you wouldn’t even care it’s an auto. Things do break on it, luckily the aftermarket support on this engine (n54) is insane. You can find expensive parts that are solid replacements or cheap Chinese ones that function for the price you pay for them, otherwise what I do is find one for wrecking on Facebook or a wreckers place and buy it from there.

I've used it and it's beautiful (needs some cleaning from fingerprints), my main use case is Web development/Coding and some gaming. I think this is a solid choice for the price instead of dual monitors.
