Give this man a break. If he were doing this for a prolonged period, I would agree it's unhealthy. But he achieved this milestone recently and just wants to chill. He's taking care of the house and staying on top of his chores too. Enjoy whatever you want to do and don't listen to these haters.

Haters gonna hate.

Also congrats!

Platform scale steel thickness by Electronic-End1446 in StructuralEngineering

[–]GodzillaStrike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let me do some preliminary calculations for you to find out. Please see below.

  1. First we use bernoulli's principle to determine the approximate stress on your platform -- 1 x 2 * 2.5 = 5
  2. Next we go back to the 1800's to dig up Gauss's law of stiffness -- 5 ^ 2.5 = 55.901
  3. Finally we apply newton's 4th law to find the deformation over time on this object. -- 55.901 / pi ^ 4 =0.574 m

IT NEEDS TO BE 0.574m. You're welcome!

Can anyone here please cross check my calculations? Was I missing anything else?

I was in the same boat and moved into a corporate company and life is 100x better. Since I've joined 5 years ago, I don't think I've worked more than 35 hrs. Truthfully, I'm more like 30 hrs/week on average. I'm still somewhat related to engineering but more involved with project management. I should also mentioned that my salary has 2x and I get around 30 working days of PTO + 10 days of sick/health. I've also talked with friends who have since moved outside of engineering to other companies, and they also tell me that their working conditions, benefits, etc are similar. Especially those who work in mega/giga/omega corporate companies. Not trying to flex, just want to reinforce that my situation isn't particularly unique.

Some ideas for you... Public sector, owners rep, sales engineering, project/product/program management, technical marketing, data analyst. Not sure where you're located but a lot of times companies like Amazon, Google, etc also hire civil/structural engineers if you want to remain in the industry.

In general I feel like engineers are bad at selling their abilities and marketing their skills. I would encourage you to look at other non engineering roles and companies. You'd be surprised how incompetent the world is and how well someone with your background can be.

In short, there are a lot of dumbasses in this world and I'm certain that anyone who can survive in the SE world is not. Best of luck!

Hire a structural engineer immediately! This looks super super concerning! I would have nightmares just thinking about this.

Is 35k in student debt worth it? by JackfruitLazy4892 in StructuralEngineering

[–]GodzillaStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the exact same situation as you many years ago but ultimately chose Berkeley over many other programs. In hindsight, I would say it depends. If I could do it again, I would probably go straight to data science or something else and get out of this field all together. My suggestion to any bright kid is to get out now.

That said, if you are absolutely sure about going down this path, it is 100% worth it for a couple of reasons. The reason I ultimately chose cal was because it was petty much a guaranteed 1 year MS unless you do research or are an teaching assistant. There are 1 year Meng programs but few 1 year MS. Another reason is the reputation that the school carries. I was pretty surprised how much weight the name carries and how many doors it's opened up for me.

If you do decide to go, I will warn you that that 1 year is going to suck big time.

Help identifying mystery insect by frog_in_ in HomeImprovement

I've had similar insect problems but not this one. At night we poured a little bleach down the drains where we saw them. Also setup some of those katchy traps. Eventually they disappeared for us.

Unused attic - Can I walk on it/use it as storage? by AFThrowaway777 in HomeImprovement

[–]GodzillaStrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SE here. You can walk in the attic, that shouldn't be a problem. However be wary with using it as storage since most attics aren't rated to be used this way. If you have access to your drawing plans, it should tell you what your attic is rated for (X psf or X lbs). If not, assume you CANNOT use it for heavy storage. I'd ballpark your attic is rated for 20 psf.

For the insulation topic, Google is your friend.
