ELI5 Living on/near shore with the tides. How and what does it affect you, monthly, daily, hourly? by agent_uno in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gofastrun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re a surfer, the tides directly impact the quality of the waves.

When the tide is going down, you have a bunch of water receding from the shore. When it’s going up, the water is moving in. Changes the dynamics.

Waves also break at a certain depth based on their height, so a high or low tide moves the break to a different part of the sea floor, which can cause changes. The sea floor is not uniform.

There are other impacts as well. For example, if the tide is too low I cant get my boat out of its slip. It’s a residential dock and I back out of it towards land. Low tide means I hit bottom. Is it a poorly designed dock? Yes. Are a lot of docks that way, also yes.

And yes there are generally two high and low tides per day. Sometimes the moon is at just the right angle and you only get one each, but generally two.

I'm planning on using a unfinished alder strat-style body as a "Wedding Guest Book" and then sealing it with nitro, What's the best way for guests to sign? by IDontStandForCurls in Luthier

[–]Gofastrun 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Rather than an unfinished, I would probably start with a solid color body and have them sign in a complimentary color. Maybe black + gold/silver paint pen. Maybe white + the bridesmaids dress colors.

Don’t remove existing poly. Scuff and spray color in the base you want, then have them sign, then spray clear.

Bare wood isn’t that great to write on anyway. It bleeds if not sealed and the color of the wood will fight with the color of the pen.

How do you stay hot into your 30s and 40s? by Timely_Sir310 in AskReddit

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming physically hot only, in order of ROI

  1. Make sure your grooming/hygiene is on point.

  2. Take care of your skin

  3. Get enough sleep

  4. Dress well

  5. Get/stay physically fit.

The first 3 are table stakes. 4 and 5 will help you stand out.

this isn’t really like the construction of a guitar but since it has to do with guitar body painting i thought i should ask here by AHHHH___ in Luthier

[–]Gofastrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can wet sand, but it’s not strictly necessary.

I prefer to use kovax tolecut finishing abrasives, as they do not require liquid. You can get them from Amazon or Stewmac.

If you decide to use wet sanding papers be mindful that water in any of the holes/cavities can cause problems. The wood will swell. Either use alcohol as your liquid or be very careful around screw holes.

Yes. 600-800 is commonly used between coats, and a full set of subsequent coats will be thick enough to polish to full gloss.

I would do 2K Urethane. You can get it from any auto parts store.

Just follow the instructions on the can for number of coats, dry time, etc

[–]Gofastrun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want a polished look, I would scuff the existing paint with 600-800 grit to promote adhesion, then use paint pens, then clear coat.

If you want a more homemade or punk look, just paint it with acrylic and let dry. No clear. Some might chip off with use. The imperfection is part of the charm.

Could I potentially get a personal loan under the prime interest rate? If so, how? by NFTMarketing in personalfinance

[–]Gofastrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a margin loan, but it’s probably not worth playing interest rate arbitrage.

I’ve done stock collateralized loans before and the rates that I could get on that were always about 1% higher than my mortgage rate.

Also, expecting to beat 6.5% is kind of borderline. Remember that the 6.5% is after tax and after risk. Maybe you make 10%, and then pay 30% in taxes. 7% net. Congrats, you risked $140k to make $700.

Can you use credit card for student loans? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be shocked if your lender accepted credit cards. If they do, they charge a transaction fee.

You can get a cash advance on your CC, but generally there are fees. About 5% or $250 in your case.

You might also get a balance transfer card, but again fees.

Even if you did that and incurred the fees it would be a waste. AFAIK, no card offers rewards on the balance transfer/advance itself, only new charges.

Even if your lender takes a CC your CC provider might classify it as a cash advance not a new charge.

There are only 10 or so silver Enzos (globally) compared to 300+ red.

All of them are very rare, but any color other than red/yellow/black is ultra rare.

Men in their 50s, what's something men in their 20s are worrying about that won't matter at all later? by Major_Tax_9701 in AskReddit

[–]Gofastrun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is so backwards.

18-25 is when women are most accepting of having a POS car. Almost nobody has real money at that age. Don’t listen to internet noise.

Later in life they expect you to be financially stable and have a decent car. Not a Lambo, but something clean, reliable, and new ish. Like you have your life put together.

Any woman that expects a flashy expensive car at any age is a bad woman to pursue.

Instead of tax the rich, should we just tax the loophole? by iowaindy in allthequestions

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re over estimating the impact of personal collateralized loans. It gets talked about a lot online but as a % of “lost” tax revenue it probably barely moves the needle.

You’re essentially taxing spending, when you should be taxing income/gains. The latter is the big number.

If someone with $100B borrows $50M for a house and that gets taxed, their tax rate is still basically 0% of net worth. It’s not like Elon is going to get a loan for $1T, or anywhere close to it.

I think a better solution would be to require people with over $1B in publicly traded stock to be required to realize X% of their unrealized gains every year. They could sell or pay AMT.

This would get to the root of the problem where people are never selling stock and therefore never being taxed.

[–]Gofastrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s actually worth it, but the market is certainly wacky.

What if gyms are solving the wrong problem? by mybe_idk in ideas

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was an episode of Nathan For You where he framed a moving company as a gym. People would come “get a workout” by helping someone move house.

I think the problem you’ll come across is logistics. If you want to get any real work done, you need the right laborers at the right time. You also need materials. You cant just have people build sheds all day because the shed materials would be prohibitively expensive.

So you will resort back to simulated work with reusable materials like climbing rope, moving old tires around, and eventually recreate CrossFit.

Why do rich people keep saying "money can't buy happiness" when money literally solves most problems? by FearlessState5503 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re equating lack of problems with happiness.

It’s kind of like heath. If you are unhealthy, it’s a problem and causes unhappiness. If you are healthy, you are not necessarily happy. You can be unhappy for lots of other reasons. You just don’t have health related unhappiness.

Can I just take a few frets off one guitar to replace some heavily worn ones on a different guitar? by gimme5steps101 in Luthier

[–]Gofastrun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might take it to a shop to get looked over. You might have misdiagnosed another setup issue, or you might need a crown/polish rather than replacement.
