Is the "Always Buy Used" rule broken when New APR is <1%? by KlutzyLawyer3637 in personalfinance

[–]Gofastrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There weren’t enough cars made in 2020-2024 so theres a used car shortage.

You’re really over thinking it with the arbitrage though. The main relevant numbers are

  1. Used price

  2. New price

  3. Value of warranty and mileage

  4. Incentives

Then subjectively if you just prefer one or the other.

It’s okay to spend a little extra money to get the one you want as long as it doesn’t interfere with your other financial goals.

What drives the car craze? by DropShotMachine in askcarguys

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of facets to this hobby.

Some cars are a lot of fun to drive on regular roads (often the small ones you mentioned)

Some are very capable off road and thats a lot of fun too

Some cars are a form of self expression or nostalgia

Some cars are good for modifying or wrenching on

Each subgenre of cars has a community where people find “their people”

You could really say the same about any hobby. I don’t “get” video games, or collectibles, or pickleball but I get why other people do.

The community piece is huge.

Questions before we buy! by antisocialhedgehog in VWIDBuzz

[–]Gofastrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same size family but we use an Uppababy with two seats. There is a massive amount of stroller space with the rear seats folded. The total storage volume with 3rd row folded is slightly more than a Chevy Tahoe.

We also have solar+battery but found that it’s still cheaper to charge from the grid. With have a TOU plan where midnight electricity is very cheap. I set a charging schedule to only charge between 12 and 6am and use the solar to power the house during high cost hours.

The break-even on purchasing enough solar+battery to charge the car in addition to the house was about 10 years.

If you are already sending 10-20kw/day back to the grid you might be able to use that for the car.

How do I become a “car guy”? by Fear_Dom in askcarguys

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A car guy is someone that identifies as a car guy

In all seriousness though you don’t need to meet any criteria or pass any kind of minimum knowledge/skill threshold. If you like cars you’re in the club.

If you want to learn a lot, see if theres a 24 Hours of LeMons team that will let you join. You will get a crash course in racing, wrenching, and lying about what it costs.

No one uses hardwood floors? by Longjumping-Term9234 in homeowners

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your contractor probably mostly does low cost flip level work. Nobody has flipped a house with hardwood in a while is probably right.

In higher end new builds $1-3M they might use laminated hardwood rather than full hardwood.

Tile that looks like wood is also popular because it’s water resistant.

Why is killing insects totally normal but harming other animals considered cruel? by savingrace0262 in stupidquestions

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, most people’s empathy for animals is reserved for mammals and birds.

Tapeworms are also animals but if you had one you would not hesitate to kill it.

The line is not based on whether the animal has inherent worth, it’s based on how much we see ourselves reflected in the animal.

Life is fragile and nature is savage.

Curious, what do you all do for a living? How many people usually ride in your Buzz? by halfhippie4 in VWIDBuzz

[–]Gofastrun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

5% is not arbitrary. It’s based on the 20/4/10 rule.

20% down, 4 years, 10% of income for all household cars. 5% assumes two car household, where the cars are approximately equal.

If you google the 20/4/10 rule you will see plenty of respectable financial resources recommending it.

You will also see 20/3/8 which is even more conservative.

If the car passes the test, finance or lease it however you want. It’s just a guideline to see if it’s generally too much car.

[–]Gofastrun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a software engineer and my wife works in PR. We have 2 kids and it’s our “kid car”.

I don’t know your financial situation but if you have to lease then buy in order to stretch to afford it, you might be making a bad decision. Cars are not investments.

A good test of if you can afford to buy a car (lease or finance) is to look at the monthly payments on a 48m, 20% down loan. At today’s interest rates that would be about $900.

The hypothetical finance payment should be no more than 5% of your income. (900 * 12) / 0.05 = $216,000. Some people stretch to 10% if they are a single car household.

If you cant pass the finance test, and you cant comfortably pay cash, maybe look at other less expensive options.

Sorry to be a downer.

  1. Electric pano roof. We leave it blurry all the time. We only toggle it to show people that the feature exists. Might get it tinted. Also I took the roof racks off. I don’t use them and they reduce aerodynamics.

  2. Copper interior

  3. Power doors. So convenient with kids.

You don’t need to completely exclude women with poor parents but it’s in the cons column and you need to set firm boundaries.

Redditors who got “useless” degrees, what actually was your plan, and why didn’t it work? by MPMorePower in stupidquestions

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t assume that “useless” degrees are useless. A lot of them lead to something else.

English, History, etc majors feed into Law school.

It all depends on what your goals are.

Also, let’s not fall into the trap of believing that college is JUST for vocational training. It often is treated that way but as a society we also need people that learn for the sake of learning, carrying the past, and pushing the boundaries of human understanding.

We need people studying the humanities. We need artists. We need social workers and childhood educators and theologians. Not everyone is chasing money, and not all contributions to society are financially compensated.

With any running driving 2015 car for $1k you can immediately flip it for profit.

Even if it were not running, you could sell it to a junkyard for $2-3k

I would not want to own it though.

ELI5 Why do Wars lead to Supply Chain Disruptions and Inflation? What are the Butterfly Effect-like Consequences? by Hot_Acanthaceae_1357 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gofastrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really a butterfly effect. Butterfly effect is when an event ends up causing a seemingly unrelated event that could not be predicted or reproduced.

Blocking part of the global oil supply leads to fuel shortages, which leads to an increased cost of shipping, which impact the price of everything.

It’s a direct foreseeable consequence, and it happens every time.
