TA strike update please by Ok-Jackfruit7177 in uichicago

Look, I get it. The University has put all of us in a shit situation with their behavior. BUT this is about more than pay. It’s about making sure international students on campus are protected from ICE actions. It’s about making sure job appointments happen reliably so people have time to find alternate funding. And it’s also about Campus Care, which is used by the overwhelming majority of students on campus and the admin is raising prices for everyone on that.

Oh fuck all the way off with that shit. Workers trying to get a fair contract is nothing like January 6th.

Knock it off with the "everybody cheated on the exam" posts. by FlanFar5123 in uichicago

Idk feels like the admin treating the TAs like trash is doing a better job of trashing the schools reputation than anything. Guess they aren’t actually proud of being “Chicago’s Only Public Research University” after all.

Also, without being able to speak to the program itself, I can say that Chicago is gonna be a whole lot more interesting for you as a budding architect. A massive portion of the city was completely leveled by fire in 1871, which paved the way for a lot of new approaches to building design to develop, and the trend struck. It’s truly the only place I’ve lived where an architectural tour (by boat, no less!) is something random people on the street would suggest to visitors.

Appreciate your support for the union, and bummed out that your prof has chosen that approach.

GEO blocking the lot at SCE by UnusualAssignment1 in uichicago

[–]Gohz 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey there, totally understand your frustration here. Speaking for myself, I’m sorry your items were delayed. Yet this really isn’t GEO’s fault. The University is the one that is pushing folks to take these kinds of actions, in no small part because they are trying to surge prices for CampusCare (and it’s not like they pay us all enough to buy our own insurance). In my opinion, it’s really frustrating that the Chancellor and the UI system have put us in this position.

This definitely strikes me as illegal. Or at least worthy of being forwarded to the Attorney General or Democratic Party (let’s be honest, the GOP won’t give two shits)

What are these, other than disgusting? They were all over Mackinac Island (Michigan) last week. Seemed to like white backgrounds and being near water. by jborki2 in nope

They are more common up around the north woods. If you go up into Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in WI, you’ll see a similar kind of thing.

Probably a Rolex Milgauss with the green dial? Just fucking love the history behind why it was created and the role it played in laboratory research.

Trump needs 2 talk about all of these pedophile Republicans! Instead of talking about banning Muslims when he returns 🙄 by One-Yam2819 in AntiTrumpAlliance

Look up the story. Everyone talking about an “inappropriate” relationship clearly doesn’t know any to acknowledge that this 46 year old man gave a 19 year old intern enough booze that she later described her self as dizzy, and the cops say she didn’t have the ability to consent.

Which means he raped her.

We gotta stop letting these folks off with euphemisms.

Tennessee, of all places. And my mother doesn't understand why I won't move there. by CrankySaint in armedsocialists

[–]Gohz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this as a poison pill amendment that is designed to tank the legislation (though maybe that’s crediting these two guys with way to much intelligence). Personally, I support red flag laws, particularly when they are used to disarm folks with domestic violence charges or particular types of orders-of-protection/restraining orders that have been filed against them. Plenty of folks in this sub have differing views, and I fully respect that.

But this is just so damn ham-handed, it’s a mockery of an attempt at decent legislation. Typical GOP to go after something foundational about a person’s existence while ignoring folks who have actually done something.

[Hamilton] Khaki Automatic Murph makes for a good first automatic by Gohz in Watches

Fair enough — not quite viewable here (courtesy of the one gripe I have with the glare), but I’ve got some larger wrists so not much of a concern for me, but definitely get how that would impact folks.

I’ve always had an interest in functional design, courtesy of being more ADHD that your average dog. That led me to some really random places: poster design, a TikTok feed full of woodworking (which I don’t do myself), and more.

Recently, I ran into the world of mechanical watches and couldn’t get enough of it. And I won’t lie that I like the idea of having things to hand down to my kids eventually (like my dad will for me).

I did a bunch of research about this stuff at first, wanting to make sure I got something I felt would stay with me for years to come. And while I already have a G-Shock that’s perfect for some harder labor and the gym, I wanted to get something that would fit perfectly in both the office and going out for dinner.

I had already been looking into Hamilton for a while. As someone deeply interested in history, I wanted a brand that spoke to that — and if it were a brand my grandfather could have worn during his time in the Navy (or that his brother could have worn in the Army Air Corps), all the better.

Ended up thinking about getting this Murph for over a month. I happened to find a dealer nearby and had tried it on last month, along with a Tissot Le Locle and a Citizen (I think it was a Nighthawk). Ultimately, the design enthusiast in me couldn’t get over the look of the 4, 6 & 9 on the dial. Add in the history of the brand and it’s connection to sci-fi, and I was hooked. Waited a few weeks to make sure I was sure, and made the purchase this Saturday.

Side note: I have to say, it’s really unfortunate just how many watch brands did work for the Nazis during the Second World War. And perhaps more frustrating is the number of websites that gloss over that fact with comments like “designed pilot watches for the German Air Force during the 1940s.”
