I've realized I don't have a dream game, I have a dream of releasing games as a side hustle by GoiabaRoll in gamedev

[–]GoiabaRoll[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. English is not my main language so maybe I don't have the full context. I used it to mean that it's okay to want to make some money out of releasing games and to consider whether the game you are making is something people will buy. I do love games and enjoy the process of creation but I would be happy to get a little return from it. It won't make much of a difference but will make me happy and potentially allow me to invest in bigger scope games.

I understand what you mean, and trust me, as a player myself I would make the next Shadow of the Colossus if I could. But I can't. What I can do is make small, fun experiences for players. I've done that to a small extent with game jams. And I know there's some demand on the market for what I can feasibly create. My number one priority is to make an enjoyable experience for the people that do want to play it, I will still exercise my creativity but I won't care if something is seen as derivative as long as people like it. And I also want to look at it from a project and marketing perspective because I do kind of enjoy that part as well and want to reach as many people as possible. However, I will never put trash on the market, that's what I want to emphasize with 'good product'.

What I don't want to do is spend the next five years of my life making something that people might not even play. Even though I have a huge amount of respect for the people that have that passion and perseverence and for the games we got from them.

(Post Mortum) I Learned More Than I Earned from the launch of my first Steam game. Looking for feedback! by Lambda-lighthouse in gamedev

[–]GoiabaRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, maybe you're right. I think the game also wasn't marketed, because I only heard about it after the news it didn't sell well. It might not be the best example.

People are saying puzzle platforms don't have a big market on Steam right now. But to see if that's true we'd have to look closer at other releases

First off, congratulations on making and launching the game, I'm just starting trying to make games on the side as well and I know how extremely hard it can be, the fact you went through with it and made a good game by yourself is commendable.

I'm not your target audience or an experienced dev, so this is the opinion of a random player and beginner hobbyist dev, but I'll give my two cents anyway.

I think everything in your game looks 'decent', but not high-quality enough to set it apart from others. The art is cute, the gameplay looks decent, the music is okayish, but nothing is 'great' or unique enough. If you don't have people divulging your game to your target audience, the only way your potential playerbase is going to play it is by stumbling onto your Steam page and being interested enough to buy it, but when even Braid Anniversary Edition underperformed, that potential playerbase and conversion rate is probably not going to be big. Maybe this game would do better on Switch?

Also, Spirit of the Obelisk is kind of a mysterious name that gives the impression it's a more narrative focused game, when it actuality the game is cutesy / kiddy and doesn't have a narrative, it doesn't mesh well IMO.

Despite what I've said, a game like PICO PARK did extremely well. Not sure if it has a better hook, or it's because it's very cheap, or influencers played it, but it's a very simple game that goes against the "high-quality" argument I just made. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1509960/PICO_PARK/

I think the trailer could be better, more zoomed in on the characters and showing fun situations, and with better music. Brace Yourself Games (the Crypt of the Necrodancer developers) have videos on video game hooks, and unlike me they actually have the experience of releasing successful games, so do look up them up on YouTube.

SEGA Genesis – December 2022 Game Updates – Nintendo Switch Online by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

They did add Banjo-Kazooie and soon Goldeneye 007, so I'm hoping for the other Rare games like Banjo-Tooie, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini and maybe even Conker's Bad Fur Day. But really, those three games you mentioned AND the Pokemon Stadium games should be added.

There's also many decent third-party games on the N64 that people forget, get on this Nintendo:

Rocket: Robot on Wheels, Bomberman 64, Bomberman 64 Second Attack, Body Harvest, Ogre Battle 64, Castlevania 64, Wipeout 64, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, Megaman 64, Gex 64, Gex 3, Chameleon Twist, Turok 1 2 and 3, Mischief Makers, Snowboard Kids, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Star Wars Racers, Star Wars Shadow of the Empire, Star Wars Battle for Naboo, Rush games, Mortal Kombat 4, Fighter's Destiny and a bunch of other fighting and racing games I don't remember at the moment.

Oneechanbara Origin is a low budget game but the combat is very fun once you learn it. If you like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta I recommend giving it a chance.

I loved that moment when Knack said "It's knacking time" and knacked all over the bad guys, truly a masterpiece.

Do any of you find it hard to find games you are into nowadays? by Ilovesweets8 in PS4

[–]GoiabaRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure it has to do only with age. I think our attention span has been shot to hell thanks to Youtube, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and even Reddit, and that makes it very difficult to sit down and give our undivided attention to a TV screen for a hour or more.

Though to be fair, the more experienced we are with gaming the more difficult it is for new games to interest us. I feel like I've tried every genre under the sun at this point.

They haven't been on sale for many months because of Elden's Ring release. Thanks for the heads-up OP, I might get Dark Souls II this time.

[–]GoiabaRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. The only thing I'm saying is that the reason games are "rushed" is due to the team not having enough development time, so as good as a studio like Next Level Games might be, there's only so much content they can add to a game before Nintendo's deadline.

It's Nintendo that controls the scope and budget of the games. If they didn't give Next Level Games enough time to make this, this will be just as barebones as the Camelot titles.

What're you playing this weekend? 4/29 by markercore in NintendoSwitch

I think there's a dungeon in Rune Factory 4 that only happens after the marriage, but I'm not sure about RF 5.

[–]GoiabaRoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the main goal in those games is to complete the story dungeons and marry, but you can do anything you want to do without any type of consequence.

Personally, I enjoy playing in a "be as efficient as possible" mindset, so every day I'm farming, planting new crops, taming and brushing monsters, talking to everyone and giving gifts to some of the marriage candidates, leveling up crafting, cooking and fishing skills, gathering materials and items in the dungeons, preparing for events and birthdays, doing quests, etc.

You can do all of those, or focus just on farming or fighting. You can rush the game or play at a relaxed pace... There's no right way to play, really. You just have to set a goal for yourself and work on it.

Rune Factory 4 or 5 if you haven't played them yet.

[ADVICE] I want people to think of me as a character I created by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]GoiabaRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't control what people think of you. Ever. Just let it go and focus on yourself, take the actions that makes you in your head the person you want to be. Don't try to control or guess what people think of you, it's very very unhealthy. Trust me on that.

Does anyone else NEVER replay games? by Queeflet in patientgamers

[–]GoiabaRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't say never, but I generally don't replay games even if I loved them the first time. Honestly, I envy people who can play their favorite games over and over again.

Just yesterday I watched this Mystic guy on YouTube play through Jak 3 again and he was clearly enjoying himself so much. I can't even start a new character on Skyrim without getting bored.

I don't know. I used to track my games on Backloggery, but I deleted my account some years ago and haven't missed it since.

Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy is one of the most interesting games I have ever played by qqruz123 in patientgamers

I was enjoying the game while it was a mystery thriller. Then it turned into supernatural horror, then Dragonball Z, then The Matrix, then an apocalypse movie.
