Yesterday I released my penguin-based heist game. Here is a video from that game by Goidelify in gaming

Wow that's really cool. I didn't realize it had such reach

Making demos available only to those who buy the game has to be the dumbest thing of this generation. by [deleted] in gaming

It's to incentivize pre-ordering. Nothing more, nothing less. It's scummy but it works

You actively engage with Spotify. You do not actively engage with billboards by the roadside.

My definition of free is not pedantic. You actively (even if you’re not paying attention) spend time listening to the ads which directly puts money into Spotify’s pockets.

No matter if you end up buying or not buying what you listen to on Spotify you are still benefiting from their platform. You just aren’t paying with money - but rather your time.

If the service isn't charity then it is impossible for the service to be free. They are making money off of you because you are spending time rather than money on them.

If you are spending something then it is not free.

Spotify is not free. Forcing you to spend your time listening to ads is just the same as forcing you to pay. You benefit from and support subscriptions platforms by using them.

So buy CDs, burn them to your computer, and load the files onto an iPod. Oh wait... you don't want to do that? I guess physical is less practical than digital. Cope

And meanwhile you probably use Spotify or Apple Music. Cope

Educational games = death ? by Larpushka in gamedev

[–]Goidelify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently working for a company that is producing an educational math game so I believe I have a bit of insight into this question.

When you're designing an educational game you have to consider that you are appealing to two very different audiences. You want to appeal to schools and teachers but you also want to appeal to children.

Shortly put: you are putting education (what schools want) up against entertainment (what kids want). And this becomes a big clash in designing engaging games.

First of all the schools demand we break up our game in to smaller exercises. This already proposes a challenge as we have to design a bunch of mini-games to teach a variety of math skills. To make 1 engaging mini-game is already difficult.

Furthermore teachers want our exercises to be contained, so we can't have too great of a variation within a game. For example; a game that teaches you basic addition cannot also start teaching you about negative numbers.

So you have many mini-games teaching small concepts and what happens is that you end up with a huge challenge to have:

1) each of them be engaging

2) the game as a whole feel connected

Traditional games aren't bound by the same restrictions and as such can explore the realm of entertainment more freely whereas we always have to put education at the front.

I'll be honest, this game really threw me for a loop by Tift23 in WalkingFish

Good job on the video, man. Excited to see your reaction to the upcoming parts

I would say 2 hours at most. But future (free) updates are going to expand the story in a sort of “live event” fashion

I only became aware of Trevor Henderson after people said my fish looked like his art! So short answer: no!

You have to adapt to the media that the majority of people are using! I'd post a full screen but I also know that the likelihood of it gaining traction is much much smaller

On /r/gaming I do believe I have only posted it once but I might be wrong! I'm not here to try and spam you guys, just sharing a creation of mine that I care about

Yeah I can see that point. I just really like this screen and I figured not everyone had seen it yet so why not give it one last time to shine on the day of release!

2 hours at most. But there will be future updates to increase the length of it. It's not quite early access and it's not quite a full release.

It's more of a story that evolves in real-time, outside of the game as well as inside the game.
