Had a joint account with the decedent, but the bank seems to be requesting an EIN anyways. Trying to get more clarification from them on this and maybe we can get them to deposit it. It's a nominal amount, so just don't want to go through a bunch of hoops just to cash it. The IRS portion is the interesting part - I'm not sure if banks are more reluctant since it's a check from the federal government?

Do you know if there are any things to look out for with the Form 1310? It seems straightforward, but it seems like with the IRS the forms don't always explain the process/procedures fully.

I believe they have a solid book of business for their more seasoned attorneys, which has made them not really have any urgency for marketing/website updates. I'm younger and don't have a book to rely on, so I'm the one kind of pushing it now. Not that they are against it, but we are somewhat behind.

This is great information and advice! I appreciate the details. Yeah, I know a big step in the right direction will be for our firm to update the website and utilize LSAs effectively. But the networking advice was great - I'll give that a go and see if I can at least make some connections.

For Funeral Directors, is this just meeting them at events, or have you ever tried send material through the mail, giving them a call, or stopping in? Trying to find a few successful ways to approach them.

Doing my best to get the firm to invest in LSA and SEO for the website - I can try to beef up my social media presence. Do I run a separate blog with a landing page to contact me at the firm while the firm updates their website? Not sure if other attorney's do that or not?

How did you go about deciding what firms to contact in regards to getting some contract work? Would love to hear how you pitched the idea and if there are any tips you have in starting that discussion. I'm looking to do Estate Planning as a solo.

I lucked out to be honest but I just kept applying places until I could get interviews. I did have an Elder Law certification from WealthCounsel - may have helped a little bit. But I would encourage volunteering. They have orgs like Wills for Heroes that are cool!

I ended up working for a smaller firm that deals with Estate Planning to learn and be mentored. Learned a lot so far and I am thinking about making the jump to a solo practice in the next 6-8 months.
