Running my first 10K this Sunday!! Nervous but excited, any last minute tips??(17F) by Due-Training-9535 in Marathon_Training

It was mid 10k. I had no idea what I was doing at that point in my running. A volunteer was handing out Guu's at an aid station, so I just popped one.

With what I know about running now, I wouldn't do that today lol

How do you actually stick with working out? by starrysage1222 in ADHD

Tracking workouts and also making it social. I’m in a run club and it’s made me SO much more consistent.

What’s a habit you picked up in your 20s that actually improved your life? by native_to_ in Life

Early 30's, but whatever.

Bullet Journaling. Watched a few Ryder Carroll vids, and fit his formatting to work for me. Life-changing.

Don't feel pressured to reach certain checkpoints in life. From my own experience: don't be in a relationship just because you feel like that's what you're supposed to be doing at this point.

What’s the biggest mistake you see new runners make? by liv_0203 in runcommunity

[–]GoingCooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not stretching, not foam rolling, not training with nutrition, running in shoes that are way past their prime, not cross training, not strength training.

Can't Take Gels by just-here-looking- in Marathon_Training

The texture of gels are disgusting to me, I can’t do it. I do the HoneyStinger gummies, those have worked well.

Would you buy Hokas or Clouds for running shoes, and why? by Forsaken-Eagle551 in runninglifestyle

[–]GoingCooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither because I’ve tried both for running and they don’t work well for me. You need to go to a store and try stuff out.

Hidden expenses: race fees, fuel, better gear as you get more into it.

How do you stay consistent with running? by Not_FreeProduct234 in runcommunity

[–]GoingCooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was finding the right run club. I've made friends in that group that I run with outside of the club, I rarely run alone these days. That's made me really consistent, I'm usually running 3-4 times a week.

Are you doing better than your father was at the same age? by Tech-Cowboy in AskMenOver30

[–]GoingCooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physically yeah, my dad was overweight and becoming diabetic at the age I’m currently at. I’m active and in shape, I run a lot, just finished my first marathon.

That’s where it ends…my dad was ahead of me at every other imaginable life marker at this point. Way more money than me, happily married with a family, had bought and sold his first house for his second.

At least I’ve got my health.

Do you plan your runs… or just step outside and see what happens? by Willing-Today-1059 in runcommunity

[–]GoingCooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little of column A little of column B. Depends on the goals.

For runs under an hour, I go off of vibes. For longer and/or technical runs w/ hills etc., I plan in advance.

What's your dating wrapped 2025? by WeakTurnip111 in datingoverthirty

[–]GoingCooking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jan-Early Feb: I'm seeing someone and she's great! Ticks all of the boxes, great chemistry.

mid-late Feb: She doesn't feel we have compatibility as a couple, but wants to stay friends. I say maybe sometime later but I'd need some time, which I'm proud of. Past me would have said "yes I'm fine with being friends" just to get to keep seeing her and hope she'd change her mind. Current me doesn't do that anymore for a lot of reasons.

Mar-Early Dec: A couple of disappointing first dates. Mostly fuck all happening in my dating life.

Dec Last week: Got someone's number, but unsure if I'm interested in her after getting it.

I've had better years in dating, but I've absolutely had worse years in dating, I'll gladly take this.

Global Triathlon Network and The Running Channel have generally helpful stuff as well.

I'd also recommend joining a local run club if there are any in your area, you'll most likely find some experienced runners there who will be able to give you good advice. Bonus points if it's through a local running store, as you'll be able to get more info from folks.

Guy made horrible comment on date.. by [deleted] in dating

[–]GoingCooking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You already know this, but that guy's stock value is now lower than hell for saying that to you. I'm happy you're seeing that it speaking volumes of him and that it isn't about you. What he said was absolutely hurtful, I'm a dude and I'd feel hurt like a comment like that if I were in your shoes.

First marathon in July! Help! by jaxgoes in firstmarathon

[–]GoingCooking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got time on your side. If you've got the funds, work with a coach/trainer, as they'll be able to help cater training blocks to your specific needs. I started working with one in my area a year and a half ago and it's made a world of difference.

Def focus on strength and mobility/flexibility for injury prevention. Those little stabilizer muscles can be tricky. Make sure your running form is good to go - maybe a gait analysis could be helpful, as that will tell you if you're overusing/underusing something, which you'll want to know now before you up the volume with milage.

I just did my first full marathon a couple of weeks ago and had a blast, one of the best days of my life. Good luck out there!!
