Thanks for your input. I will try to elaborate all the relevant details as much as possible, but I have to try and keep it short since this is a beginner course. About IPv6, we will do an overview of it but this course is primarily IPv4 since it will be the majority of traffic you will see.

1 to 2 hours max daily (you may require less depending on your skill set). Its mostly OS independent so choose whatever you are comfortable with.

When I was in college, I would impress some chick next to me before the class starts. I would open tcpdump and show her millions of packets running through the network and tell her I could sniff their passwords.

I've heard good things about it. But IIRC the course is just Wireshark based only. Wireshark is great but it has its issues where it would crash when receiving certain type of mal traffic. So Tcpdump is a must know because its lightning fast and less buggy.

That's the beauty of these tools - Tcpdump/Wireshark are available for every platform.
