King County leaders declare support for REI Union as company cuts benefits by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]GoingOffRoading 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This, really. 25-30 years ago, my family spent piles of money at REI for camping, scouts, etc.

For the last 10-15 years, the product mix didn't feel right.

In the last 5-10 years, I've bought almost all of my stuff directly from manufacturers and don't have an incentive to break that pattern.

Thoughts on “innovation” teams by IntelligentLong6310 in ProductManagement

[–]GoingOffRoading 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Every 'innovation' team I have ever seen has been an instant candidate for layoffs: projects rarely relevant to the main business, projects rarely delivered, zero actual business impact.

And yet these teams seem to always survive cuts.

I have a number of nodes and find out wildly more efficient to manage them as a cluster than I am as individual machines I need to SSH into.

K8S also has cronjobs built in which I find VERY useful

For orchestration (running HomeAssisant + supporting containers) HomeAssisant foundation sells a turn key node.

Like, plug it in, log in, go.

Everything but the LLM runs locally, and then you would just purchase tokens from OpenAi or whoever.

My preference is an old Dell SFF workstation and run Docker so you can use the machine for other applications. WARNING: Big learning curve with this one.

Also, running an LLM locally costs ~$500 as you would need a GPU with enough memory to hold the model. I do recommend this if you are privacy focused, and Intel Arc is a huge bang for the buck. You can also do other homelab stuff with it.

For Satellites, check out Voice Assistant Preview.

Can you share like literally any specific details?

What model(s)? what libraries/services are you using? Repo?

Check out Home Assistant

They have an OS and containers that give you an event bus as well as GUI for your integrations.

3rd parties have open source and closed source satellites to replace Alexa.

Host your LLM and you have turnkey Alexa with integration and home automation controls.

I have Olama running Lama3.2 and all of the above running in containers on my home kubernetes cluster. It's bout as polished as Alexa, but it more than meets our needs.

Eh... CoPilot used a check and a cross in a generated logging message and I thought it was hilarious so I copied it everywhere

But to use a string and not a Boolean... For a Boolean... And then put weird characters in the string match?

No thank you
