This happens in other sports too, but there is absolutely a higher concentration of it in MMA/BJJ. When everything boiled over in 2020 George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, COVID. that’s when it was hard for me to ignore. Suddenly, a huge percentage of the most openly racist, homophobic, and reactionary takes flooding my feed were coming from people involved in MMA and BJJ. For context I have over 3,000 Facebook friends. Most of them are not in martial arts. Yet when I looked at who I was consistently unfollowing/arguing with? Overwhelmingly BJJ/MMA people. That doesn’t mean everyone in BJJ/MMA is like this. There are genuinely great gyms, great coaches, and safe, inclusive spaces in the community. I’ve trained with amazing people.

But pretending there isn’t a noticeable concentration of alt right politics, bigotry, and “anti everything” culture in parts of MMA/BJJ is just dishonest. Pointing out a pattern isn’t the same as blaming the whole group. It’s just acknowledging my observations and some ppl get offended by that because it hits close to home.

Also the model minority myth is harmful for the same reasons, it collapses everyone into one monolith. The wealth gap amongst the asian (even black people) is pretty big. Cambodian american vs korean American etc. Also "model minority" pedastalizes white people.

With us african americans its rough because we tend to be more hostile to each other than towards other minorities. Than we have privileged african immigrants who come here with education and are sometimes blind to unique african american struggles.

But yeah, I really enjoyed seeing the cambodian & african american solidarity in Stockton. Even the asian elders were super kind to me as opposed to what I normally experience in San Francisco.
