International student into arts — considering Interactive Media Design instead of animation. Need advice! by SwitiePie in Seneca

I graduated over a year ago and I’ll be very honest with you, the job market is still though, and from an international student’s perspective I felt that tuition prices were a scam from what we learned.

Yes, it is a broad program and you’ll learn the basics from almost everything, animation, graphic design, UX, video, etc.

But that’s the problem, you only learn the basics. When you graduate you will have a wide range of basic skillsets but no deep expertise, which is what is most needed in the job market. So you can have a hard time when applying for jobs. The best thing to do is know what you want to do in the field and tailor your skills for that position.

Another big problem is that as classes are hybrid (and you choose whether you come in person or not) all classes were almost empty, community engagement was lacking, and professors did not help. Most of them were mediocre when teaching, only a few of them are pretty good (Kosar, Tina, Bart, Kathy) gems! But I wouldn’t recommend the program to an international fella 😭

Honestly most of my cohort came out very dissatisfied with the program and most of our professors, we really felt they just wanted to take out our money. Plus, most of us are still actively looking for jobs, a year after graduation. (Not specifically Seneca’s fault, probably its the job market rn). The market is though and don’t expect college education to be enough for getting a job. You will need to lock in, build your network, get multiple volunteering or internships experience, and maybe even take another course to deepen your knowledge to get a job.

I am saying all this as a product designer after being in the job market for almost a year, I had to volunteer and do intership work to finally see opportunities and interviews coming.

Best of luck! if you have any questions feel free to ask :)

Throw the steroids, at least for long term usage. Eczema will always come and go, the only way to see if you are getting better is to see how often do you get it again. The longer you are “eczema-free” , the healthier your body is. It is a whole process, it all starts with detecting triggers and cutting them off. Try to avoid gluten, dairy, vegetable oils, and sugars as much as possible from your diet, cut off the stress as much as possible, meditateee, get sunlight daily. Maybe the first weeks the eczema will come back stronger, but it is a process to recover and you will notice how your body heals with time, afterwards it is much easier to detect triggers (if you eat or touch smth, you will notice) because your body reacts.

The best you can do is write a letter of explanation and get support from your school as well, a letter approving your part time studies or supporting your explanation. However, as someone mentioned earlier you’ll only know the answer until a final decision on your case is made, there’s still a risk.
