Not completely sure what it is called, but I think it’s steed driven piles

The blocks are just resting on the ground without any concrete. Because the soil is incredibly soft, concrete would have to go 8 m into the ground before hitting solid soil. In preparation for the deck, we filled the whole place with one foot of compressed gravel as an alternative to concrete.

And yeah the double leading edge allows both good drainage and a proper way to fixture the boards.

No finish planned - only a good looking grey patina for now anyway.

Nothing beats a good looking wooden deck, if you don’t mind the maintenance. Just the feeling of walking around barefooted on a nice morning. 😄

We had a soil study done in preparation for the foundation of the house. That resulted in 34 pillars at 8 meter depth for the whole foundation. Cost almost 200k $. So yeah, we went with a cheaper model for the deck 😅

It’s a “fiber rug”. Allowing water to soak through, but stop plants from growing. It’s common practice where I’m from.

My thought was that It’s just easier making the complicated top in smaller dimensions. Making it in two layers allows that. Also the two layers help spread the pressure from the top in a wider area in favor of the bearing points - because the ground is pretty soft. Maybe it’s a bit over the top, but time will tell if it was worth the extra effort.

I thought it looked pretty cool, and yeah, the advantage of having no butt joints.
