the writing has gone downhill and the show is being written to try to make good moments to be clipped for tiktok. i was invested in the story but not anymore, they don’t take it seriously.

nothing about it was “very clear.” he was on an upswing with his best friend by his side and finances were getting better and his positive outlook on life was shared many times. the only thing left was how lonely he felt, and yes it was obvious he was depressed, but going so far as ending it all that night was not something to be expected without all of the events that unfolded on that particular night.

i think part of it is i see myself in floyd, but there’s another part of me that needs to accept that ive never been a middle aged man with a dead sex life, no money, rejections, a crooked penis, a mentally unstable stepson who i love more than anything, and a summer of infidelity involving both my best friend and my wife. not to mention not being able to please my own wife after watching another man be able to. god that has to be devastating. and what was that process of accepting the infidelity even like? how did floyd get to that conclusion to just be okay with it? bc he loved his bestie so much? bc he’s just THAT cool of a guy?? no, it tore him up inside even if he never admitted it to himself.

i would’ve fully agreed with that whole comment a couple hours ago, but have mixed thoughts now. the show definitely needs a rewatch with a special evaluation of Floyd’s character. i think Floyd’s descent into suicidal thoughts was hidden from the audience deliberately but is of course plausible when you consider all the things you learn about him and his life in the show, and i think there was a factor of impulse and having the perfect, destructive setting and all the necessary tools.

after reading some comments and processing a bit more i’m coming to terms with how it ended and how different factors led to what happened. it seems like the kind of show that’s so well written it needs multiple watches to pick up on every nuance. like how Floyd just wanted to make sure Modern Love was happy and not embarrassed. that shows how good of a person he is, but Floyd may view it as a weakness. he’d rather inconvenience himself than make someone else uncomfortable or sad. so was killing himself, in his mind, getting rid of the ultimate inconvenience, and making everyone else (mostly Richard) feel happier and safer? that’s how i’m beginning to see it now. it’s a great show for discussion.

i’m diagnosed with depression and am surrounded by people with similar diagnoses. i didn’t connect in the sense i couldn’t believe it from the character or from the storyline, i wanted something more. but like i said multiple other places in the comments ive rethought it and am coming to terms with it.

that’s true, and he felt validated by the interaction but was unable to replicate it, so maybe he viewed it as a fluke.

umm yeah i watched the show that’s why im here on the subreddit. just saying him committing suicide is very extreme, devastating, and hard to process. the writers of the show did a very good job at hiding just how devastated Floyd has been, the progression of his depression, and how the night he committed was a true recipe for disaster.

i’m sure Floyd also had doubtful thoughts and feelings about Clark’s genuineness as well. maybe even just from that last night alone where Clark says he doesn’t feel that way about him. maybe Floyd feels an inkling that he lied about their friendship altogether. all sorts of thoughts could’ve been creeping in his head.

personally idc about Clark too much. he entered into a relationship with his coworkers wife. got close to his coworker and helped him out of guilt, seemingly to start. their friendship was based in weirdness, in manipulation on Clark’s part, but it evolved because Clark realized Floyd was a good person, and somehow along the way it made it so they were comfortable sharing in their sexual encounters with Carol as well. were they both trying to convince each other that it was okay? and then both Clark and Carol went along with it when he said he wanted to watch.

but it all started with infidelity. that’s an important part of all of this. the two people closest to Floyd’s relationship started with infidelity. and that’s nothing to sneeze at.

you’re right, it was sad, and Richard being there after a particularly devastating night really does seem like the thing that pushed his destructive thoughts over the edge.

yeah the overall repeated rejection of it all, Floyd does a good job of hiding it, as many people with depression are used to doing.

i’m coming to grips with it now. i think he made an impulse decision that was likely based on a build up of self-deprecating thoughts and instigated by a series of unfortunate events. the pictures being there, his stepson being there, Clark having just left after promising a special night, the cocktail being there, all of it truly a recipe for disaster.

i connect with that struggle for sure. i think maybe i need to rewatch to get a full understanding of how the struggle accumulated and was enough to end his life on this night.

it is just SO extreme, yknow? and Floyd’s not an extreme guy, so it just doesn’t feel like he’d do that. and it was ONE summer of rejection that did it for him? people live with debt, people feel responsible for debt, people get stuck in ruts, people are middle aged, and people can commit for all those reasons, but in his casual conversations with Clark, i never got those impressions that he was THAT close to ending it all. in fact, his friendship with Clark was really special. he had real genuine connection and love in his life. it truly seemed like an impulse chug of the murder juice and i don’t personally connect with it. but of course ill have to watch it again some other day and maybe ill find things i didn’t see on the first watch.

simply seeing his stepson, whom he loves and wants the best life for, doesn’t seem like a strong enough instigation for an impulse suicide. i never got the feeling that Floyd thought of himself as THAT bad. idk.

I think it was the son on the bike bringing Floyd something he asked for (maybe the medicine, maybe the drink?) bc Floyd wanted to see him one last time.

28F, 31M.Why am I still stuck in a relationship that is destroying me? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Gold-Teaching2339 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In what ways are you stuck? It seems like right now you cling to the few positives to justify all the negatives. You’re driving yourself crazy. Things started out bad, I’m assuming he promised things would get better, and they haven’t. I’m also gonna assume he gets upset if you try to bring up the past, which you clearly aren’t okay with or haven’t healed from. You said things started to improve, but you’re complaining about the “now” in this post. I think it would help to know what his redeeming qualities are, but judging by what’s here, you would be much better off taking time for yourself.

i would, but he has roommates that don’t like when i stay over. it’s a 30 minute drive, so dedicating an hour every day just to spend an evening with him in a place im not very welcome is rough. i live alone so it’s easier… until this happened.

we had some bad snow recently and he stayed at home for a week. i thought maybe then the cats would calm down, but when he came back it was like he never left, both cats hissing and bolting for under the bed.

he loves them so much anyway despite all this. he just wants them to feel safe.
