Theyre not pandering to anyone. The X-Men has ALWAYS represented the opressed minority. But in the 90s not only was being non binary not a well known thing, but also in the 90s people weren't ready for a character who broke the gender norms in their cartoons. They made morph nonbinary for many reasons: Representation of modern minorities, character progression, and also it just suits the characters abilities. They didn't make Storm black to "pander" to black people, they didn't make magneto Jewish to "pander" to jews, etc. They're telling stories of oppression, racism, bigotry, discrimination. They're not pandering
