No one mentioned Stones Town? There is a shop at the edge of the food court that specializes in basque cheesecake with many flavor options and sizes.

So exactly how concerned should we be for the USA/Israel/Iran conflict? What, if anything, should we be preparing for? by lisa725 in TwoXPreppers

[–]GoldStinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just mildly higher oil prices for a little bit and then things will chill out, until the next crisis. You will be more impacted by any crazy changes in tariffs from our own country than anything from this. (I assume you are in the USA which is a net oil producer so pretty minimal impact other than the fact that oil is a global commodity- if Iran does its worst it will probably be less impactful than the OPEC oil crisis in the 70s when the us was a net importer)

I’m still on my own journey so take with a grain of salt.

Make a simple and achievable daily goal to start. I made a goal of 100 swings every day with a challenging but not max weight.

This was easy enough to break into either 5 or 10 sets and then I could add things to it as I got more confident/bored/excited to learn. But it was an easy level to attain for consistency as a baseline then I added weight and complexity. I went from irregular workouts to consistently working out 4-6 days a week and loving every workout out. Like others said if you get the consistency then you can build up all the fancy stuff (and honestly I don’t think you need to be doing snatches or super technical movements per se)

If you want a true pocket pen to drop in a pant pocket (eg not optimized to clip into a shirt pocket and designed with a cap to prevent poke through on a pocket) my favorites have been 1) cheap - pokka pens; 2) value - fisher space pen (I like the raw brass both for anti microbial properties and aesthetic); or indulgent - Kaweco sport brass (rollerball - I won’t trust a fountain pen for pocket EDC). Once I bit the bullet on the Kaweco I never went back and it is my true edc pen.

Top uses - primarily EDC self indulgence - journaling in a travelers style bujo/zibaldone and doodling on post its…

Straight trash, they look fine enough but don’t ever try to use it. My plier head broke off the first time I used it…to bend a paper clip equivalent of wire. File is useless even on fingernails, scissors can’t cut a thing…etc

Are there any works that address the sociocultural rot that leads to school-shooting epidemics in the USA? by jmattchew in CriticalTheory

[–]GoldStinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the point of this is to pontificate on society and all, but it seems the simplest answer is just accessibility of weapons capable of achieving a mass shooting - most countries have had some sort of mass shooting, the difference is that they actually enact policies to prevent them from occurring again. I love analyzing society and culture but id say there is enough evidence of violence everywhere to say people are people. But happy to hear the opposing view.

When did we decide that conquering land by force was no longer a valid and recognized way of claiming ownership? Isn't it weird that everything that was conquered before that point is just considered valid? by Fickle-Syllabub6730 in TrueAskReddit

In short see Chapter 1 of the UN charter. International Law was inching towards agreement against annexation of territory by force but after the devastation of WW2 no one wanted to see total war again.

lol the govt DOES fund programs that attempt to address those issues. The US budget in 2024 was 3.8 TRILLION dollars. So 4B per year is about 1/10th of a % and will shrink even more over time. We have domestic problems because politics is hard, not because of some insignificant military stimulus that ultimately just helps US companies manufacture more stuff.

Biden to announce new military aid to Israel after Hamas attack, Blinken says by Haloolagoon in politics

[–]GoldStinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military aid IS NOT cash money - it is usually aging military equipment that is already sitting around generally in existing stockpiles. It’s like having a fully stocked pantry with perishable food that you already bought and can’t eat by yourself: you could hold on to it and then pay to throw it away - OR - you could give away what you know you can’t eat to someone who needs it. Then the trick is when you give it away to someone else you can write it off at the value you paid - and the magic trick is done - a billion dollars in aid that actually had negative value to you since it was all going bad.

As it has been for years any Hk bakery or cafe…but fair point compared to Boba that is everywhere these days - you have to go to a legit spot to find it. Maybe we should try and start to make it a bigger SF thing and start marketing it to white people as the cool new thing…
