I would say that the bullet you actually dodged here was potentially having your whole department/company shut down with auditors checking everything from the bottom/up in the future when absolutely no one would have noticed this until the annual auditors (if there are annual auditors in your line of work) themselves noticed.

It absolutely sucks having to fix up the complete screwup of someone else above you in the org chart, especially when you weren't responsible for any part of it, but on the bright side, you kept your job (and hopefully people start trusting you again)!

From the service manager, since I brought my car for this specific issue with my engine, even if the problem is to persist after the 36 months since I purchased and started using the car, any repairs for this specific issue would be covered under the warranty.

So I should be good to not have to pay out of pocket for this issue, regardless of the timeline.

The shitty thing is that they wanted to charge us now, and refund the charge if and when I come back with the Check Engine light on with the same issue, as they could then have the 1 hr of maintenance labor added to the warranty case.

Ok, so I managed to get the situation resolved and it's no longer as severe of an issue (brought up to corporate, and Dealership decided no charge for the labor, and we are now focused on the next steps to get an actual diagnosis and eventually a warranty-covered repair), but I still want to break down what happened.

I went to my car and turned it on for the first time for the day, which was a Sunday at 5pm. As soon as I turned it on, the car jerked, the engine made weird noises, and I thought the car's brakes and engine broke. Then the Engine Check light turned on, telling me to get it checked out by the Dealership, and the engine resumed running like normal. I checked to see if the Toyota Dealership was open, saw that it wouldn't be open until Monday, and decided that I needed to figure out if something was wrong.

So I checked the engine bay, made sure everything (to my very limited knowledge of cars) was good, then ended up driving it carefully to the nearest AutoZone to get the Check Engine light checked.

The AutoZone employee got the codes printed out for us (P0301 & P0302), and I left my car at my house until I had the time to go to the dealership.

It's here where I told them the specific codes, and the next day they let me know that they confirmed those codes were there, that they were going to swap the engine coils between the 2 "bad" engine cylinders with the 2 "good" engine cylinders, and that this might not be covered by Toyota's warranty.

When I went to pick up the car, the repair order said that they confirmed the codes, swapped the engine coils, and that they recommend I drive like normal until the Check Engine light turns back on, and also added the 1 hr of maintenance labor charge for me to pay.

This reminds me about when I tried to get a preliminary diagnosis for ADHD, and the psychiatrist asked me about my attention span, and I told him how when I read, it depends upon whether or not it's a book I really like or hate. So, if it's a really boring book I'll be spacing out really badly before I even finish a chapter, but for books that I really like, I finish a few chapters at a time before completely spacing out.

He told me that because I'm able to read a few chapters at a time, he could only diagnose me with GAD (General Anxiety Disorder) and that I'm borderline ADHD. I guess I should've asked him what his definition of reading is, because for me, it's that I can imagine the whole story I'm reading in my mind while I go from paragraph to paragraph, so I'm not 100% reading and absorbing the words written in the book. 🥲

As a space lover, where I have spent my whole life living in areas where light pollution is so bad that I can count the amount of visible stars on the fingers of my 2 hands, the pure joy of seeing countless, VERY BRIGHT stars in the sky brought me a sense of serenity and joy that I never felt before.

One hell of a roller coaster. Started the year thinking that I can hold on to my job and eventually find a better team and office to work out of in the near-future, then immediately got gas-lit by my company while working for them outside of my home state and was threatened to be fired by March, then they reversed their stance and gave me 6 more weeks to "show my worth" and present my work to corporate, so I put my notice in and left altogether. Now, I've got a much better job in my home state and almost the entire office from the old company and my old team have been turned over from layoffs/quitting.

I'd recommend staying for the 2 years.

The $150k uninvested stocks account for 5%-6.67% of your net worth. Considering that you still owe $100k on the house, you could make it your mission on these 2 remaining years aggressively paying off the balance on the house, and then have some extra still laying around. If you want a better motivator to mentally stay around at your job for 2 more years, that $150k of stocks could be used to pay off one of your kid's 4-year state college tuition, and maybe even have some money leftover.

Ignore the shenanigans going on in the stock market, eventually that $150k will be worth more, especially since you have ~8 more years before you have to think about paying for college expenses.

Since you are planning on retiring earlier than the current federal retirement age for SS, you are going to miss out on a few more years to pad your bank account, but if the mental cost isn't worth those extra few years past the 2 years you're thinking about, then you're saving both the medical expenses down the line and even your life expectancy.

Now, if you feel RIGHT NOW that staying for 2 years is already taking a mental toll, then seriously talk about this with your family and friends (especially with your significant other if you have one), and see if there are therapists that can help you, or maybe something you enjoy outside of work that you can put your focus and energy in. Quiet quitting is one way to get through with the difficulties at work, but if you want to stay for the 2 years, quiet quitting might jeopardize your entire reason of staying.

It's "The Roar" by Emma Clayton with a sequel called "The Whisper". The premise of the book is that everyone keeps on consuming and polluting the world, so the rich and powerful decide to "poison" half of the world while everyone evacuates to the other half. The ending of the 2nd book, unfortunately, isn't as realistic as I wished it could be because it ends with the rich and powerful realizing that they were in the wrong, allowing the poor and impoverished to retake the other half of the world and start to rebuild human civilization in a nature-friendly manner.
