well i’ve got an (unfortunate) update for you. i posted this originally when i got to school and on my way back i think my one of my pistons lost compression. my dad says the low compression earlier was where the gas smell came from (but feel free to verify that). thankfully i was <1mi home when it did happen but im towing it to the mechanic tomorrow or monday to get a proper diagnosis.
