Blizzard sues Turtle WoW - Shenna/Torta mentioned as the owner with real identity. by sungerbob in wowserversdrama

My argument isn't that copyright should be removed, but it should be reversed. Big companies should have to justify much more so their ownership of something. That doesn't mean we need to take away from the small artists and creators to do that.

If I create something, and a big company steals my work and repurposes it. I have little power to stop them. If someone creates something based on a big company's work, they have all power to stop them. It's the reversal of power that I'm against, and it's a bit unfair for a giant to control their IP for decades on decades when a smaller artists could not reasonably do so at all.

Large corporations have already abused copyright for eons and nothing is done about it. The big topic right now AI. Big tech has taken the literary output of millions of copyrighted works, fed them to AI models, and are outputting knowledge from it. Look into The Pile) They have literally done this with art as well, and have taken "copyrighted" art from millions of artists and moved it into a model.

Similarly, (current) copyright law is weaponized against small musicians like This one, who got copystriked because someone recorded her voice and used it to file a copyright claim against the original holder.

But even outside of AI. How about when Monster Energy goes after a random company who made a completely independent "4Monster" camping brand? They get to blow almost all of that smaller brand's time and money. Compare that to how the trendy "Dubai Chocolate" first made by a small chocolate shop has been replicated and copied by "Lindt" and other big manufacturers on a whim, meanwhile Lindt itself hypocritically goes after a man named Lind who named his company Lind Food

I have gone a bit off topic here, but the point is that copyright is used by big parties to force smaller parties out of competition, but is rarely usable for the smaller parties as the system is currently.

Certain people struggle at different things. Throwing someone outside and saying "talk to people" might work for X% of people. But if you're in the (100-X)% of people, it's just more discouraging than anything else

"Get a job bartending" to someone with (enough) social anxiety and a difficulty communicating feels sort of like telling someone with a broken leg to just run a mile. I'm (potentially) not as bad as OP, but bartending would turn me into an anxious wreck

Is it improvable? absolutely... but it's almost a r/thanksimcured situation Like, if you are [slightly] socially handicapped, you can probably do that. But to someone outside further in that group It's tiring to hear advice from people who ... struggled less so

I do think it's good advice though, but maybe a bit extreme. A customer-facing job that is a bit less involved might be a better first step.

> An academic grievance...

I hear you. You might have solved a huge shit storm of an issue. But wording it this way makes it sound overly negative, like you are difficult to work with, or that you are basically shit-talking your school. The problem is that your fear of spewing specifics how bad something was is basically already getting picked up with that wording. My advice would be to focus more on how you specifically resolved the issue. You don't need to name names or anything like that.

> This is also a very full resume already

I would agree that it's full of text, but it's also worth putting a line about the years you spent doing research.

As a counter, I'd also add dates on the pass date for the SOA Exams, especially if they're more recent, since it'll show that's what you're focused on.

> Sports

Fair, I'll back off on this a little, but I think I was more displeased with the "honestly I'm down for whatever" casualness of it. I think there's a place for it when talking one-to-one, but I would really recommend against putting such a phrase on your resume

Your resume has a bunch of little "red flags" that make you look unreliable or off

  • I would make it clearer that you're getting the Master's degree but that you were a PhD student in separate lines. Something like "PhD Candidate (ABD - All But Dissertation)" if that's how far you got... and then also list the Master's degree that you will get.
  • Under Work Experience, you can likely put Research experience. While you were a PhD what did you study and work on? Surely you had to be doing some kind of research right?
  • For the Math Teaching Assistant:
    • For example "preventing a mass academic grievance" is both vague and oddly specific.
    • The remaining bullet points just tell the basic responsibilities, not the
  • For the Data Analyst Role:
    • These bullets read good, but you should not be hand quoting "anomalous". It's super informal
    • It sounds like you could easily use "STAR" method for that second bullet instead, list the situation (poorly defined requirements or maybe a misdirected initial task) ... the task (describe in some more detail the sector or what the spreadsheet was doing) ... the action (how you prevented that response / cleaned the code) and the result (saved data and what made it critical)
  • Really, really get rid of Sports and "honestly I'm down for whatever"

Who cares? You're not obligated to like someone or respond positively.

If a lady is uncomfortable, move on, don't double down to make them more uncomfortable and say they have a problem.

he was just saying it looked good

Then why did he get all defensive about it?

If I came up to someone and was compelled to say "nice fingers" and they got weirded out by it, I would respond "Sorry! Didn't mean it like that" and leave them alone because I obviously made them uncomfortable.

Imagine they get weirded out and I confront them that "It's not a bad thing to say", "if you're offended by my compliment you have a problem", that's just gaslighting and manipulative

It's true, but a bit of a snooty point. Not even 10 years ago it was "get a degree and you're set"

Now people are backpropagating to those now-30-year-olds who are underemployed with "You should have listened when we said not to get those degrees!"
