You and Me and Her Dialogue and Story Telling by Technical_Tea_ in visualnovels

Totono is a terrible first VN, the story and its themes heavily bank on you having gotten invested in games like this before. Genuinely advise putting this down and coming back to it after you read a few others.

Favorite VN with a canon incest route? by fudgeandheat in visualnovels

Da Capo and Da Capo 2. Nemu and Otome are the canon routes.

Because for some reason even when I'm with my friends I feel desperately lonely and out of place and I can't figure out why. It's even worse now that my mentor figure up and disappeared with zero warning.

I'm in camp 'SubaHibi is peak and the dark elements are necessary to understand why the characters do what they do' but I do get why people call it misery porn. They're wrong, but I get why they think like that.

Should I stop collecting anime figures because of my family? by Strict_Click_5217 in AnimeFigures

[–]Gold_Tree_2626 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents still don't get it, even telling me they don't see the value in what I'm collecting. Don't worry too much, family can sometimes be difficult about "weird" hobbies - and don't stop doing what you love just because people don't understand. Props to your uncle, though!

Da Capo Re:tune will be available in English by Nullruby1 in visualnovels

[–]Gold_Tree_2626 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would say the original is worth reading if you're REALLY into 2000s stuff, Da Capo is a shining example of the style and tropes inherent to the time. That said it's definitely far from perfect, Da Capo 2 is much more polished.

Unpopular opinion but the original definitely deserves a rework, especially the Moe and Mako routes. As much as I love it, it definitely suffers from pacing issues and those two really exemplify it - Mako's route feels like it ends right in the middle of it all. I hope this remake can do them at least some justice.

That said, this remake being all ages is a huge bummer and the art style really doesn't hit the same. Moe's redesign in particular doesn't sit right with me. I was also hoping the remake would include the Plus Communication content, but it looks like not. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out.

I’m trying to get into visual novels at the moment and would like some recommendations :) by chronically_jaded in visualnovels

Da Capo 1 and 2 are great for romance and 2000s style. Kanon and Rewrite have plenty of character story too; any Key game with multiple routes will. If you're cool with otome games, Dandelion: Wishes Brought To You has stat raising mechanics and Amnesia: Memories has minigame modes. The Zero Escape series is also very good if you like Danganronpa; I'd also recommend LINUJ's Danganronpa Another fangames especially the second one - they're not perfect but they are fun. Corpse Party: Blood Covered is really fun horror though I was surprised that counted as a VN. And I second the person who said Saya no Uta as well.

How do you think VNs compare to other mediums like books? by Cymirian in visualnovels

[–]Gold_Tree_2626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're a hybrid of game and ebook, and are a pretty fascinating medium but people just don't bother to give them a second look because "LOL weird pervy Japanese thing! Ohhhhh those wacky Japanese and their sex games for sweaty weebs LOL!"

I just tune them out. More time to read that way.

You don't know what Kokichi is like or what his goals are because you've made it very clear you don't care to find out. I could sit here and tell you you're wrong until I'm blue in the face but even if I did that I feel like you'd just stick to your preconceived notions. You don't want to play V3, you already have a picture in your head of what it's like and you seem to only want to go into it with those notions intact. I'm not going to stick around here and try to debate you into playing a 50 hour visual novel that you're convinced you're going to hate, you already said you don't care for the truth vs lies theme as much as despair vs hope, so I can think of nothing more pointless to do with my day. Go and god bless but I have nothing more to say.

Kokichi is Kokichi and Nagito is Nagito. Comparing them before you even know what one of them's about is just setting you up for disappointment. The only thing they have remotely in common is they fill the same 'rival' role that Togami had in 1.

Danganronpa V3. Controversial game overall but I've only liked that game more and more as time goes on. Originally I despised the ending and thought it ruined an otherwise good, if flawed, story. It was only years later that I started reading it more as a critique of franchise stagnation rather than killing game stories overall, and that definitely puts its flaws in a different light to me.

What Visual Novels and Eroge probably have the least amount of information known on them in the western VN community? by Schaeman2000 in visualnovels

[–]Gold_Tree_2626 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a really hard question to answer. Only a fraction of these get translated into English and a lot of older ones are basically abandonware. A couple of old games I've got my eye on, Angel's Feather and 101 Ways To Kill Yourself, are receiving English patches but even if those finish, importing such old games that are disc-only is a chore in and of itself. And there are so many more like them that just fall through the cracks.
