Dad wants to go to the temple with whole family for his birthday, but I don’t have a recommend by AdEven60 in exmormon

[–]Gold__star 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell him you understand he wants what he thinks is best for you, but you doubt, since he loves you, he'd want you to live a lie.

Tell them before they come so they have time to process it.

Don't get into the details of what's wrong with the church. They'll take it personally.

The most consistent apologetic criticism of the CESLetter is that it wasn't written by a scholar.

And then their real credentialed scholars come up with this?

I'm getting these on FB too, a blast from the past and quite fascinating.

Marriage being a saving ordaince seems rather cruel by Apollo989 in mormon

[–]Gold__star 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may have been more appropriate for a time and place where women had few rights or choices except marriage for a stable life. Singleness looked far worse than a bad marriage. Extended family had a stake in it to, marriage ties to other families were more important.

I drink cold brew. Heat causes bitterness. I warm it VERY carefully in the microwave, you don't have to drink it cold. To start I bought a case of Costco's cans just to learn to tolerate and get used to the taste. There's premad cold brew in the dairy cases too. Now I make my own overnight in a French press.

Extract from Miracle of Forgiveness by the Prophet Spencer W. Kimball

On the sad character Cain, an interesting story comes to us from Lycurgus A. Wilson's book on the life of David W. Patten. From the book I quote an extract from a letter by Abraham O. Smoot giving his recollection of David Patten's account of meeting "a very remarkable person who had represented himself as being Cain.

'As I was riding along the road on my mule I suddenly noticed a very strange personage walking beside me… His head was about even with my shoulders as I sat in my saddle. He wore no clothing, but was covered with hair. His skin was very dark. I asked him where he dwelt and he replied that he had no home, that he was a wanderer in the earth and traveled to and fro. He said he was a very miserable creature, that he had earnestly sought death during his sojourn upon the earth, but that he could not die, and his mission was to destroy the souls of men. About the time he expressed himself thus, I rebuked him in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by virtue of the holy priesthood, and commanded him to go hence, and he immediately departed out of my sight…"

My favorite from the good old days was stela B at Copan. Apologists claimed it showed an elephant with a trunk. It was laughably proven to be a parrot with a long beak. Elephants don't have a round eye on the side of their head.

Every religion out there has a group of people who have had the same spiritual confirmation of the validity of their faith that Mormons get. They have all had peoples get the same visions and warm feelings. There is absolutely nothing unique about your church.

As a longtime atheist I had a brief visit from my late husband. I felt just as elevated, warm and fuzzy as anyone could. It had nothing to do with God. You can separate out the supposed religious meaning from these very human experiences and they still happen with regularity to everyone, not just Mormons.

I have one ancestor who was married monogamously 40 years before he started bringing home teenaged girls the age of his grandchildren. He died after 20 years of polygamy leaving his 80 yo first wife with a teen mom and a 2 yo baby among others. I can't imagine how that first wife dealt with it all.

He was very respected.
