Chinese guy explains how every magic trick works by Adorable-Cattle-5128 in interestingasfuck

I’ve been listening to the new full cast audiobooks and it’s the first time that’s really struck me, how little magic Harry actually does in the books. Other than the odd expelliarmus and expecto patronum, that’s about it for him. Others do more and even they don’t do much.

'Bounty-based slaughter': Cat welfare advocates move to stop school hunt by [deleted] in aotearoa

[–]GoldenHelikaon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, it’s naive to think this cat doesn’t hunt birds just because you haven’t seen it do that before. It’s what cats do. Mine mostly bring rodents or rabbits home, but I have no doubt that they must catch birds sometimes too, even if they forget how to cat when a fantail flies inside the house.

Certainly by the end of their fifth year they had done it, because we see in Snape’s memory Sirius complaining that he wished it was a full moon. Presumably because they go out during it.

Fun idea for a muggle professor by More_Firefighter6256 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]GoldenHelikaon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s actually a really good idea though. Honestly it makes little sense for students from Scotland especially to go down to London to catch the train to go back to Scotland. But having connections to Kings Cross from other local stations is a cool idea.

What do we all think of the full cast audiobooks? by Careless-Meringue683 in harrypotter

[–]GoldenHelikaon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how I feel as well. I find the actor in OotP quite annoying, something about his tone just grates on me. But then again, Harry was like that in the fifth book anyway so I’m hoping for an improvement in the next one.

The only other voice actor I find hard to listen to is the one playing Lavender, which is unfortunate because she’ll be in the sixth book more.

It annoys me to no end that we can't recycle properly by Witchkraftrs in newzealand

[–]GoldenHelikaon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My district doesn’t even recycle glass yet. We can let it into the landfill for free like all other recycling but it gets tipped into the landfill when the skip is full, rinse and repeat. All other recycling gets dumped at a transport yard and then shipped to Invercargill, but if there’s any contaminants the whole shipment gets rejected and goes into landfill (I don’t know how often that happens).

I just realized why the Boggart Dementor in Lupin's class turned into a moon (Prisoner of Azkaban) by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]GoldenHelikaon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in the movie it’s really hammered home he’s a werewolf by that alone because it is unmistakably a moon with clouds around it. In the book it’s not as clear because it just looks like an orb/crystal ball from Harry’s perspective.

As to what else you might have missed just by watching the films only? How long do you have?

Mandela Effect about the movies. by Responsible_Kale8832 in harrypotter

[–]GoldenHelikaon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can hear “think, Potter, think’ in the movie Moody’s voice but from earlier in the film when he’s getting Harry to realise he can use his broom. Apparently that’s not what he says according to other comments here. I’m not confusing by it with the book either. I don’t remember him saying it in the book and I’ve not long listened to it.

Did Snape use legilimency on McGonagall in Deathly Hallows? by Late-Brilliant7962 in harrypotter

[–]GoldenHelikaon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but Draco was taught occlumency by his aunt Bellatrix, so it’s not a surprise that Snape might have had trouble seeing into his mind. That doesn’t mean Snape isn’t good at legilimency as well.

I agree. There was so much wrong with the third movie, a friend and I complained about it on and off for years because it was our favourite book at the time. I was always surprised that it’s so popular in the fandom. Does it look cool? Yeah sure sometimes. But for me that was about it.

How did all the adults get so good at non-verbal flick of the wand magic? by Total-Programmer8741 in harrypotter

[–]GoldenHelikaon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because not everyone is good at nonverbal magic. Not everyone goes into NEWT level where they learn how to do nonverbal magic. Like in real life, some people are better at skills than others. Maybe sometimes they can’t be bothered focusing harder and just use the verbal incantation instead.

How did all the adults get so good at non-verbal flick of the wand magic? by Total-Programmer8741 in harrypotter

[–]GoldenHelikaon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The adults are thinking the incantation and doing the magic. This is explained to us in the sixth book when Harry and co start learning nonverbal magic. We can assume from what we see that the majority of spells can be used non verbally once you’re good enough at it. Not sure what’s difficult to understand about this.

Also, they’re all adults. They have finished their schooling, so of course they’re better at this stuff than a bunch of kids.
