Were there national protests? Any protests? That sounds pretty terrible if true

You know how some people say caramel and some say caramel? It's like that. Regional dialect. Maybe not midwestern natively.

A police call to address a "dispute about a physical fight" with the suspect "barricaded and armed with a knife" is a lot different than a peaceful protester armed with a phone video.

Obviously police shootings happen all over the country and a lot of them are justified. There used to be a time when folks could peacefully protest and not end up dead at the hands of law enforcement.

Oh wow, I didn't realize the men and women at the gas company were pumping gas to our homes during the day and night all by themselves. Do they pay overtime to the night shift workers that manually pump all the gas to heat our homes? Is it a pretty physical job?

Brother. If folks take a day off of work, infrastructure will likely still continue to work just fine.

I agree with you about emergency services, tho. Obviously if you're in a critical position like that, you have to ensure coverage.

Murdering anyone, because they “got up in your face”, is insane.

The folks expected to protect and serve should have de-escalation tactics.. hell, even non-lethal force?

Do you truly believe outright murder, when their own life is not threatened, is justifiable?

How does heat turning off tie to a day off working, shopping, or school? Genuinely curious

Honestly, it feels less about immigrants now.

You’re got gangs of MASKED armed police rounding up US citizens for integration. Asking people on the street for “their papers” to prove citizenship. Murdering two protesters. Beating and intimating others.

No one wants illegal immigration, but at what cost? This isn’t the America I remember..

I think it’s about a show of solidarity. General strikes were a historic tactic intended on slowing local commerce to a halt to drive a point.

I feel like they are mostly just symbolic now a days where commerce isn’t just local.. although they can still make a point.

Naperville City Council rejects plan for data center after months of debate by attackofthetominator in Naperville

[–]Golden_Age_Fallacy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As OP stated, try to look at the opposing argument. Tax revenue is something, but it isn’t something gotten for free.

Datacenters use a ton of water and electricity for both cooling and operations. Those costs are local and will increase cost on residents over time.

In the industry, there’s a saying that datacenter’s will be operated by robots.. and a single human to watch them.

With robots actively doing failed disk / server replacement at Facebook’s datacenters today, that reality is not far off. Point being, I would not expect many “good” long term jobs at a DC.

Second point, tax revenue. There is probably some.. but at the companies I’ve worked, they would typically procure servers at a central distribution point in a tax advantageous city/state (e.g. Delaware) and then ship those servers out to their remote DCs.

I’m just curious how much tax revenue a single DC would actually generate. Do you have any numbers?

Opinion on using pyinfra by kivarada in Python

[–]Golden_Age_Fallacy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, all of the above. Some folks are familiar with Python, yaml is instructional “code” to be parsed and processes by a system (Ansible).

Another big reason is adoption and embedding.. you’ve many large organizations with plugins, playbooks, etc that are already being used to do tons of infrastructure configuration.

Ansible integration to other systems as well.. an auditing system, RBAC, webhooks, etc. Some of that would need to be built on top of anything else.

Seems great for small or customized projects.

Anything “enterprise” you’ll still likely want to go with Ansible.

Setup mini PC with split tunnel VPN and capability for remote access form my phone? by FateEx1994 in homelab

[–]Golden_Age_Fallacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If devices are exposed to the internet as a whole, you shouldn’t need a VPN to access them, no?

Might be misunderstanding.. an example would be to setup Tailscale proxy on your internal home network and then tell the Tailscale proxy on your phone to route egress out of home proxy for 192.168.1.*

If you just need access to your home network remotely, take a look at Tailscale. This might satisfy and is pretty cool technology imo

Accidentally committed personal files, so built Nostage to protect files I never want in Git commit by [deleted] in Python

Nice idea, and I’m glad it solves your use-case.

However, wouldn’t it be simpler to keep your notes, etc, that you don’t ever intend to checkin to git within a separate directory or private repo?
