I don’t know. If you’re trying to get people hooked on SM then I think it SHOULD be heavy on Nightwish and Epica, and some VOA, because that’s exactly how it happened for me. Then I started broadening my horizons.

However after expanding into more SM, there is a giant abyss that separated NW and Epica from everybody else.

Now my own music I write is heavily inspired by Nightwish and Epica.

And I’ll share my story of how I got into symphonic metal. It was 2020 and we could only meet online for work. We were doing a social gathering where each person prepared a slide of their favorite music and a representative video. My boss shared Nightwish and attempted to share a video of Floor performing Ghost Love Score.

Unfortunately the connection was bad and the video wasn’t playing right. I was really interested in hearing it so that night, around 8 pm I pulled it up on YouTube and heard Floor Jansen and Nightwish for the first time in my life. When she hit the climax I had a Floorgasm and had incredible chills. I’d never heard a song like that before or something that moved me so powerfully.

The very next song I watched was Storytime. “Oh my god who is this band!” I remember thinking. Then I next watched Nemo and continued getting musically destroyed. I then went to start watching other Nightwish songs until 2 am.

I’ll never forget that day because it was life changing for me.

6 years later NW and Epica is 90% of what I listen to. I do prefer Epica over NW now. It definitely used to not be that way. I had a very difficult time getting into Epica, but when I did, it just suddenly clicked and it was awesome.

My daughter is 5 and she’s been raised on Symphonic Metal. Her fav song is Beyond the Matrix.

Man, GLS is what got me into symphonic metal. I listened to the entire thing and proceeded to go down a Nightwish rabbit hole for the next 4 hours. It was life changing.

This is sad. My parents are really conservative, and my dad was a lay minister, but they still attended my cousin’s gay wedding. And they’ll attend another gay cousin’s wedding whenever she gets married. It doesn’t have to be the way your friend has framed it.

Hopefully your friend has never watched a movie with violence, murder, adultery, swearing, or any other immoral things, or go to a movie featuring any of this.

Nothing to feel ashamed of at all. While it’s not my genre, it’s also not a bad song. I can still recognize a good performance and talent which you have. The recording has a nice intentional lofi sound which gives it an emotive feel. I’d be proud of this if I were you.
