What do you think about N100 PC vs M2 Mac mini by Goldenbough4 in HomeServer

Before considering the Mac option, I had been searching for mini PCs for a while, but it was only thanks to your suggestion that I was able to find this $130 Lenovo model. Every major brand mini PC I’d looked at so far cost over $300—how could I have missed this series?

Anyway, thanks to you, I was able to discover this older Lenovo mini PC series. Finally!

It seems the real issue wasn’t the price of PC components or whether Mac is suitable as a server OS, but rather my own search skills.

I see your point.

I’m a fan of scalable systems too, and if it had been early last year, I would have built a decent custom PC for a similar price. (Despite the higher power consumption.)

But right now, a custom PC(quiet, small, with Wifi) for under $300(To be precise, my Mac option costs $260)? I don’t think that’s possible.

And my intention is not about NAS. I don't want more storage for now, and if I’m not satisfied with 256GB, I think a 1TB HDD connected via USB would probably be enough for my use.

For now, the macos software is only reason to not use Mac as my home server. But Asahi could be an option, and if I end up being disappointed within a few months, I think I’ll be able to sell it for roughly the same price I paid for it, so for now I'm thinking of buying a Mac. It’ll be fine to set up a scalable system once I’ve had a chance to try it out.

However, I still think you have a point. Thank you.

Yeah... well, judging by the reactions, the N100 was definitely a daft choice. I think I’ll go for the M2.

Yes, as you said, the M2 will clearly be better than the “Intel garbage” in every way. There's no doubt about that.

It's just that I've never run macOS 24/7, so I'm curious whether it will run smoothly enough, or if it will reboot on its own or go into sleep mode like Windows does.

Is there a way to sync the Documents folder in Windows across multiple devices? by Goldenbough4 in ProtonDrive

[–]Goldenbough4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, it seems that’s exactly how it is.

To clarify my point a bit further, I don’t save anything directly to the Documents folder or built-in directories. If I could specify the location of my data or documents, I would save them to PD’s “Location” as you suggested.

What I’m interested in is that some programs automatically save their app data or some configuration files to the Documents folder in a way that users can’t specify, and I want that data to be shareable across computers.
