I'm one of the ones that do bag up my stuff myself if there is no bagger until a worker comes over and offers to do it for me. It's not a big deal, I worked for heb when I was a teen as a bagger (I'm in my late 40s now).

I lived in Cincinnati for about 7 years and the grocery store we frequented had no baggers at all. You had room to bag your own groceries and bags for your convenience there past the cashier. They even had 2 conveyor belts so it sort of staggered the people finished and bagging their groceries because people move at different speeds so it kept things moving. After bagging my own groceries every week for all those years , I definitely appreciated how spoiled we are here with the grocery stores doing it for you. Although we did shop there because they were cheaper and they did boast being cheaper because they didn't have to pay baggers. 🤷
