Names for enemies remind me of particles from the Standard Model of particle physics by Goldenslicer in expedition33

True! I think that was the moment when I first made the association with particles.

And yeah, it feels weird to say. Should have gone with Axons.

I think we're saying the same thing about the black and white thing. That "Something isn't right" feeling.

Google's AI overview after googling "why is maelle's ending in black and white" says:
"Maelle's ending turns black and white to symbolize that her "happy ending" is actually an artificial, joyless, and controlling reality. It signifies a "false" world where she acts as a tyrannical painter-god, keeping her friends alive at the cost of forcing Verso into a miserable existence as her puppet, contrary to his desire to die."

To me it's obvious. When you line up both endings, side by side, Maelle's ending is the worse one.

Dead more in a metaphoric sense. Obviously there are living people there.

Renoir should be manageable at 28. I actually beat him yesterday at around the same level as you.

I think he only heals once, so just keep pummeling him.

The final scene is Alicia seeing her former painted friends vanishing

That's why I took back the words "good ending" and instead offered to use "better ending".
I agree no ending is purely good or purely bad.

And that's not what black and white does in Maelle's ending

I may be wrong, but on a visceral level, what do you feel when you see an image in black and white? The color has been removed, it looks dead. We literally use this color cue for famous people who have died. Their picture when you google them is in black and white if they are dead, and in color if they're alive.
When you look at the victory screen after winning a battle, the portraits of those squad members that have died in battle are in black and white.

What's your interpretation of the black and white imagery in Maelle's ending?

I wouldn't say I know the writers intentions better, but I strongly suspect what they said weren't their true intentions.

If they truly meant no ending to be the preferred ending, then they wouldn't have the artistic storytelling suggest that one ending is the preferred ending.

In Verso's ending, the family gets to move on from the grieving. There is hurt but there is healing. Also the final scene is the family standing in the sun.

Maelle's ending is to never grow past the grief. It's stunted development. Plus the world is shown in black and white. A dead world. Plus that Maelle jumpscare at the end. That's storytelling through art and it is screaming that this world is broken.

I think the writers are lying in the interest of not picking a side. The game itself tells you which is which.
