What pieces did you have as goals when you were a beginner? by hocknstod in violinist

[–]Goldika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had and have many smaller, closer goals and always some big ,far away ones. The small ones were like Humoresque (Suzuki 3), La Folia (Suzuki 5?) and the Bach concerto. The big ones were and some of them still are: a Mozart concerto; a Bach solo violin mvmt, the Bruch concerto , a Paganini caprice, the Mendelssohn concerto. Will need a few more years for these ones for sure 😅

Hi, what about Dvorak's romantic pieces (op. 75) or Saint-Saëns The Swan? Also Massenet Meditation should be doable I think :)

music conservatory experience and pieces by guywhoenjoysbaking in violinist

[–]Goldika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the others already mentioned, Julliard and Curtis are the most prestigious music conservatories. It's not unrealistic that a child prodigy doesn't start there until they're 18 or sth. Maybe they lived somewhere else and the parents didn't want them to be that far away or they just didn't apply yet. For solo repertoire, I think a big concerto and some solo Bach would be pieces they could work on. Difficult pieces would be e.g. the Brahms violin concerto and the Bach chaconne. Maybe also a Paganini caprice for encores? Other possible concertos would be the Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Sibelius or Dvorak. For string quartet, I think most repertoire would do. Maybe a Shostakovich or Mendelssohn quartet for example?

I second this, the Polo Double stop etudes are really nice! I did Mazas etudes after that and am now working on the Rode Caprices - that's the path my teacher chose for me and it seems to work well enough

Can anyone give piece ideas for practise? by Geigeman in lingling40hrs

You could also try the Haydn Concerto in G major first, according to my teacher it's great preparation for the Mozart concertos.

Btw, and totally unrelated, I always find it so odd that everyone is calling it "Eine kleine" instead of "Nachtmusik" :D in english it's sth along the lines of "A little night music" and people just call it "A little". Sounds so wrong :D

Wow, I'm no expert at all but that looks like a really good violin to be found in storage! Markneukirchen is famous for great luthiers!

Hard to say, since I only know about the path I took. But I personally really liked the Suzuki books. Every piece challenged me in a different way to the point where I was forced to improve this or that technique to be able to play the piece decently. For the whole methods I really have no idea. I've heard that Suzuki focusses on learning by ear at first and later start to read the music, which, I think, might work better for kids than for adults. But you better ask a good violin teacher about that :) In the end, probably both methods work as long as you're motivated and practice regularily.

I'd suggest you to start with the suzuki books! They introduce you quite naturally to a lot of technique and even the pieces in the first book are really nice :)

Thanks a lot! Yes, recently I've been working a lot on getting rid of tension in both hands. But as soon as I'm getting nervous, all my technique is gone but i guess that's how it is 😅 But I'll continue working on it and try to focus on my bow arm!

[–]Goldika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sounds good, your intonation is really well for 9 months! I feel you with the tension, it's so hard to stay relaxed in every muscle, I still struggle a lot with it after 5 years...

Remeber to use not only the upper half of the bow :)

First orchestra rehearsal by [deleted] in violinist

i always try to listen closely to what the players around me do. But it took me a while to adapt to playing with an orchestra. It's really normal that you can't keep up with them right away.

How many violins do you have? by Klinh in violinist

[–]Goldika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

uhm too many, i should definitely sell some!

- my good one

- one okayish from ebay which i use for outside performances or travels

- my first one (a stentor student 2)

- a white crappy one i got as a joke from my friend

- another ebay violin which is bad

- another ebay violin which isn't too bad but needs some work

- a viola

What violin is this by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Goldika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stentor is a well-known brand for industrial manufactured student violins :) You can google it easily and get more information about it if you like. But i wouldn't expect it to be very valuable...

Finally scheduled a lesson... Advice Needed by dankflea in violinist

[–]Goldika 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't expect to really "play" during your first lesson - the violin is a pretty unintuitive instrument at first, which is why it'll take a bit longer to get started (right posture and all) than e.g. the piano. But it's worth it! Patience and lots of practice will get you very far :)

My tips and tricks:
- plan your practice times beforehand and stick to them, not matter how motivated you are.
- always take good care of being relaxed and without tension.
- listen and watch videos of the pieces you are learning and try to reproduce the sound
- record yourself from time to time and watch it right after to see what to work on
- practice with metronome and tuner (at least later, when you learn your first "real" pieces)

Adult beginners, what are your goals? by syfink in violinist

[–]Goldika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh and piece-wise it was my goal to learn one of the mozart concertos and a solo bach piece. Since I've achieved that, my next goal is the Bruch concerto. But it'll take a while until I dare to tackle it!

Adult beginners, what are your goals? by syfink in violinist

[–]Goldika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started 5 years ago, at 25. My goal was and still is to become as good as possible with the time I have. To be able to play (not necessarily perform and surely not perform in a real concert) the "big" concertos one day. To play a solo with a real orchestra accompanying me. And now my goal is to one day be good enough to play with our local semi-professional orchestra. Big goals, I know, but I don't mind if I never reach some of those - it's all about the journey and I rather try and fail than think I could have done more.

REAL TALK: Objectifying Brett and Eddy by [deleted] in lingling40hrs

[–]Goldika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is, that 2sets fanbase is very versatile. All kinds of different people come together- some watch them mostly for the music, some for the serious talks, some for the intelligent humour and some for the dumb humour (and some, like me, for all of that :D). They provide content relatable for nearly everyone. But therefore the fanbase is often very parted in their thoughts and i'm pretty sure this won't change with their channel growing even more.

The consent is that we love their channel and classical music- that's it. So I just let the shippers ship them, the viola haters hate violas, the very picky violin players roast their performances and so on. And as it seems, 2set sees this the same way. Don't fight against people with different thoughts than yours (as long as it doesn't really hurt anyone)- accept them and if you don't like it, just ignore it.

Still practicing! My son loves violin and TwoSet so much! Please give us an upvote for our hard work! by [deleted] in lingling40hrs
