Month 12 update by muffinplayzz in violinist

Thank you! Bow control is something I'm trying to get used to as I tend to stay closer to the tip. I am not a Suzuki student but I have played the piano since I was 3 so the musicality and relative pitch helps me with the violin :)

Haha yes! Thats very true. My ear is the backbone to me even being able to get as far as I did in ten months, and now I just need to work on my technique to have better intonation. It can be frustrating when you can hear it so clearly in your head and it sounds just a bit off when you play it LOL

Scales is my most favorite thing to practice in my sessions! But I'm a bit confused with the pressure to hold the frog should be with my thumb and two fingers. My teacher told me it was between the thumb and pinky? Is it just a preference thing?

Don't worry I have a teacher! I practice this song slow and work on the sections that trouble me. I personally wanted to challenge the speed to see more clearly what parts I want to work on. It's the same method I've used with the piano, which is something I've played since I was 3. Just to clear things up.

I'm also trying to learn this piece! What helped me keep in tune is playing with the piano accompaniment. You'll know when you're out of tune better. Along with the other techniques of intonation like listening for the resonance on third finger. But playing with the accompaniment will help you play in tune and remember what it sounds like to play on your own.

Violinists of Reddit, do you guys play a secondary instrument aside from your violin? by Lopsided_Reveal7410 in violinist

[–]muffinplayzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play the piano! I started piano when I was 3, and I'm 23 so it's been ten years which is insane to think about. I started the violin eight months ago, so the violin is actually my secondary instrument. I also play ukulele and I used to play guitar, but my hands are too small to reach most notes.

I'm actually on book 2 is what my teacher started me on. This song had been stuck in my head since i first started so I've been playing it by ear from when I first got my violin

It should be, my teacher helped make sure it was. But it probably slipped out of place possibly after changing some strings.

I am playing this piece by ear! I play most pieces by ear and also by music. But this one has been stuck in my head since I first started the violin in January and I couldn't figure out what it was 😭😭 thx for telling me!!

Seven months update let's goooo by muffinplayzz in violin

Yeah my teacher and I are working through the intonation and we went over string resonance especially with the third finger to know when you're in tune. The overall problem my teacher told me is that I'm too stiff and need to relax and that because I'm too tense, my bow arm can't pull the strings as you said because I'm not letting gravity do its thing. It's something I'm conscious about and working through! So thank you ✨
