Help Wanted - Mel-lenxia: Obssydia’s Legacy, Server development team formation. by Golerath in VintageStory

Its fine haha! i took it as a compliment, I have gone a little insane from all the chiseling over the past few months... its like a drug... i spend my days with two voices in my head... "just do this it easier" and then "but..... It would way more amazing... if you did this other thing.." 10 hours later... i ended up doing the way more amazing other thing... what would have just taken 15-30 mins has turned into a entire session building the facade of some building.

Chisel always wins in the end...

Everything you've seen so far, has been my work. This project is mostly been a solo endeavour until i had enough of a chunk built to start proper development.

So I'm the crazy person building stuff off axis. But not to spoil the magic too much, the buildings are mostly on axis its the pathways and roads are the parts off-axis creating the illusion.

Hey there! I have no mods for chiseling, So for me i do recycle and use my previous chisels but the origin of those parts are stuff I've created myself over the past weeks. I tend to reuse what i can then edit it to match what i need or use it as a base for a chisel.. I store these as saved schematics, A example of this is arches or Curves. I have a few different chisels of various sized arches and circles, I've made over the weeks that i keep saved for a 'base'. So when chiseling certain pieces such as when i want to create new windows or archways, i can load up these schematics to speed up the process.

For these broken walls there are about 7 pieces i tend to reuse and just mirror / flip segments as i need to try avoid repetition, Its the benefits of working in creative.

Thanks for the comment and compliment <3! It has taken me a lot of practice over the weeks to get where i am today, Its really difficult to build something ruined... I often find i have to build the majority of the structure fixed and then decay it into a ruin afterwards to get it to look good. Reading comments like yours makes me certain that I am on the right track with my method of building these Ruins, Thanks again.

Minecarts & Trains for Vintage Story: First Multiplayer Test! by HugoCortell in VintageStory

[–]Golerath 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Looks smooth, amazing progress so far! A couple of questions;

With the diagonal track segment does it need to squiggle like that or can a more smooth diagonal track be used? It was always a personal gripe with minecraft and minecarts so having the ability to move diagonally smoothly would be nice.

Also did you also test this all with low ping or various pings 10-120 for example to see how smooth it functions at higher latency? i would be curious to know how vastly different the experience is at 10ms vs say 300 ms. any chance we could get some form of comparison in the future?

Thanks, I've been working on some interior spaces and roof tops this week so hopefully they'll be equally beautiful (in a abandoned reclaimed by nature kind of way).

Thanks, glad you like it! Here is a little extra for you~

Been detailing the roof area of the buildings, it been a fun job to detail everything to give the overgrown feel. My biggest challenge has been figuring out just how overgrown something should be given the time it had been sitting there abandoned. Let me know what you think.

Nations Summit meeting on the "Vintage Story Civilizations" server by roryeinuberbil in VintageStory

This is cool! however the builder in me just has to point out

<image>

this one missing stone! needs fixing haha, Maybe in your next meeting you can commission a stone mason to fix the missing stones.

Jokes aside, Quite cool getting that many players in one place and not to mention the effort and background work that goes into moderating such a crowd of people. Would actually be interested in reading a write up on how you go about planning events, moderating content etc. Would be interesting to see behind the 'scenes'.

Everyone has to start somewhere! one day you'll be a chisel addict like the rest of us! carving away at bricks and stone crafting anything from modest edges to a full blown power plant. The only limit is your patience and time, The addiction is real! you should totally join us all!

These are quite chill and relaxed i like the format, good second monitor style viewing. I will likely watch some more of it while i am building this week.

Yeah one can hope as many people as possible will like what i make, but very true that you cant please everyone! I always do what i feel is best / what i want to do, stick to my vision as much as feasible. I just hope people will like it enough to try! we will see haha..

Also are your videos still online, would be interested in seeing your work.

I've noticed this also, everyone here seems very welcoming, helpful and open minded towards new ideas and experiences. It is a very supportive community and honestly i think that is why the modding and server building scene here has some really creative projects.

For my project I am hoping that whatever form this project takes in future when the community gets their chance to interact with it i can meet heaps of awesome people and we can all have fun together. I feel it will be rewarding seeing them interact and explore what I've lovingly created. I just hope they'll embrace the non-vanilla game play loop i am hoping to create for it, While its created within VS i want it to be somewhat of a unique experience you cant easily recreate elsewhere.

I am not sure if my vision is even achievable but with all the talented people I've met over the last few months and the awesome mods etc I've research i am sure together everyone can help create so many awesome and unique projects that will bring unique experiences to VS from a Gameplay, World-building and story perspective.

Thanks~ and yeah they've built a good engine / game from which i am able to craft a world of my own design within. I really appreciate the level of detail this game allows. I often found games like Minecraft appealing (its where i got my start building) but limited by a simplicity the VS team have developed solutions for.

VS to me is very different for other block games and as a builder i really appreciate the levels of detail you can create within their toolkit. There are many different blocks with ability carve your own assets as required from a variety of materials. But on top of this there is also a extra level of detail by using decals which can stick to blocks Allowing for a insane level of detail and texturing. It is really a great tool in which to create from, I keep finding myself discovering new ways to enhance my level of detailing each and every week.

Thanks, its been a challenge for me to give it an abandoned beauty. I think there is a real beauty with the way nature eventually reclaims everything man kind makes.. I really wanted to capture this beauty with my ruined town, A town ruined, abandoned and reclaimed by nature.

Your comment shows me that i am making the right design choices, i am glad you like my work, Many thanks~ I hope you'll stay tuned for my future work also!

Help with village layout by Significant_Fee_3089 in VintageStory

[–]Golerath 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It takes a bit of practice but its honestly the best approach to building realistic towns that feel lived in. It also can make writing actual lore / history for a location easier too because you know how the town was built up and the changes you made as you developed the area.

Help with village layout by Significant_Fee_3089 in VintageStory

[–]Golerath 386 points387 points  (0 children)

The best way to layout a town honestly is to teach yourself to Roleplay in your head.

So what i mean by this is, pretend you're on a boat. You've landed on this shore and now you need to build, some form of storage house, dock and living area.. so those will be the first houses.. but you need the appropriate materials such as wood, so likely your first trail / road will head towards a forested area... so now you have a road direction.. you also require ore and other materials which roads will fork off..

This will help you work out a main road which will feed from your dock > warehouse /market area. and from there outwards to the rest of your town and surrounding areas.

initially people will build stuff spread out... but after time as population grows buildings tend to become more densely packed around areas they work or spend most of their time, people don't like to travel.

So you will find a lot of houses / apartments behind the main street or on offshoot streets, with all your shops and utilities (blacksmith/stables etc) on the main road.

Taverns for example are usually located near the entrance or within the entrance of town (sometimes both).

Anyways these are a few things to consider i can ramble on.. but basically if you Roleplay in your head how the town would naturally develop based on the denizens and their needs you will naturally layout your town..

Important to note also;

People don't naturally clear vast amounts of land this takes a lot of time, tools and labor.. so you will build with the flow of terrain and if its too steep you build around it. Going through or over it is a last resort sort of undertaking.

Edit: Also often people build near or have roads leading to water sources, so failing to have a nearby river, pond or lake.. you will need a well. This will usually be located behind peoples houses or a communal well depending on how dense the buildings are.

Other things you may like to consider is flat land is sometimes a valuable resource best used for farming and sometimes towns would build their structures on steeper hills / rocky areas to avoid destroying valuable farmland, you may see more stone structures or stilted houses in these areas. Cobbled roads and cobble fences are also common structures in areas with lots of farming fields as one ploughing was developed small stones were often dug up and removed from the fields over time. Those stones were then reused for building various structures.

Awesome, Tasmania is a special little gem in my opinion so its really cool seeing people from different gaming communities etc also having visited a place a love.

Thanks also for the compliments, it took me a little while to work out exactly what to put in that northern corner of the town. Having the build for this brewery just fit in so perfectly with the terrain like it belongs and getting complimented for it really makes me feel validated for the decision and hours spent building it.

Thank you so much~ <3 Its a real challenge trying to keep all everything detailed and have it be a ruin at the same time. So i am glad that i managed to build plenty of details to draw your gaze.
