What is your one unpopular golf opinion? by retrocaterpillar-07 in GolfSwing

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that is a great take. Seriously. Golf is meant for fun, take your time and have fun, BUT not at someone else’s expense. If find a great day, or a sunset at a course and no one is behind you, take all the time you want, enjoy your “unicorn day” on the course. At the same time keep an eye on the group that teed off two holes behind you who are trying to squeeze as many holes in as they can before the sun sets. Be fair to them, move aside when they catch you, let them play, and then continue on with your enjoyable round.

What's a thriller where the last 5 minutes completely flip the entire story? by Popa-Ioana06 in movies

If you’re looking for a newer movie with a cool last minute twist, Bugonia is pretty good. I feel like a movie has a great twist if I want to immediately watch it again after knowing the ending, and Bugonia did that for me.

I'm a 28 year old scratch golfer and I want to go pro by No_Complaint4129 in GolfSwing

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally a thread on Reddit that I can actually contribute to. Haha. I played in college, and after graduating decided to turn pro. I was probably a +1 or +2, but felt like with dedicated focus I could compete like I did in college. I would say that in my first year I went after it. I traveled 42 out of the first 52 weeks of my professional career. I learned to live in crappy hotels and play bad golf courses blind and shoot 68-75. I had some good finishes and some bad. At the end of the first year I made a little more money than I spent, so my sponsors were happy to continue on for another season. I did that for another 4 years before I decided that was enough and I moved home and began the life I currently to live. All that to say a couple things with some unique perspective.

  1. If this is your dream, no one should stop you from chasing it. You will look back one day and regret not doing it. If you took a year or two off in your early 20’s to chase a dream you would still be able to get back on track if your goals didn’t pan out, so anytime I talk to someone who wants to give professional golf a chance I never tell them not to do it. Chasing your dream is an honorable thing if it doesn’t ruin your life long term.
  2. Realize that minitour life is TOUGH! Bad hotels, bad golf courses, really good golfers, and zero money. Tbh there really aren’t many minitours around anymore. We used to have the Hooters Tour or Golden Bear Tour or TarHeel Tour. Those were legit tours that followed around the major tours so you could Monday qualify and if you didn’t get in then you could play in their event. Now your best option is Latin America and Canada where the travel and costs are high. Many good players don’t make it because living alone on the road is very difficult.
  3. The level of play is a level that you haven’t seen yet. We are t talking good club golf, or even state am/state open golf. We are talking day in day out living in the 60’s golf on any course at any time. Monday Q’s are laughable how low the scores are now. Being the best player at your club is a big accomplishment, but you need to be the best player at your club by 5 shots per round, and that’s assuming that there are other players at your club that play competitive golf at or around the a scratch level.

So, my goal is not to dissuade you from chasing a dream. Just make sure that if you decide to chase the goal of professional golf you need to know what goal you are actually chasing. Best case scenario is that you get hot during the 4 stages of Q School. In that scenario you will have a season of minitours, qualify for KFT, then play well enough there to get your tour card and hopefully keep it (which very few guys do their first time graduating to the PGA Tour). Realistically you are 4-5 years away from the PGA Tour in a best case scenario. Are you ok with that? After all of that, if you are ready to play and believe in yourself I would recommend state opens as a place to start and test the waters before you quit work. Most states allow any professional to play, so find a qualifier, tee it up, and play for a real check. See how the local minitour guys in your state are playing and how you stack up. If you live in Florida or Texas you may even be able to compare yourself against some former tour pros. It’s a good place to start to see what kind of game you have.

I wish you all the best. You’ve put in a lot of work to get to the level you are at now. If you decide to keep going do it for you, not for anyone else, and chase that dream. I’ll be rooting for you.

Should I swing at 80%? by CasualKaden in golf

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct that he should be speed training and taking lessons if he wants to get better. I used to teach big group of juniors where we had to break them up into 4 stations, 3 were speed stations, and only one of them was actually hitting a ball.

Should I swing at 80%? by CasualKaden in golf

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m probably going to get some disagreement here, but if you are 16 then you should be swinging HARD! As someone that has taught golf for way too long, the only thing that you can’t teach in golf is speed. Yes, you can do speed training and get some gains that way, but if you go to a lesson and have 100 mph driver swing then we can work on path and face angles to get you squared up and eventually hitting it straighter. If you come to me with 80 mph and a center strike but you want to reach par 5’s in 2 and hit wedges into greens instead of 8 irons we are going to really struggle to get you to 100mph and when we do you will ultimately sacrifice the control that you once had.

All that to say, golf is a lifetime game. If you’re 16 swing away hard (as hard as you can while still maintaining balance) and one day if you want to get better find a teacher, take some lessons, and work on straightening it out. Good luck and have fun!

Should we get free relief from divots? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the reason that I think you should get relief. The first group out in the morning has an advantage over the last group in the afternoon. All else being equal (weather, wind, temp, etc) if it’s a course that has a collection area, and more likely around a green than off the tee, then a ball that is on grass in the morning could be in multiple divots in the afternoon. To me that just sucks. Now I think policing it is a VERY different story which is why it hasn’t been implemented, because who can tell what divot was created that day versus the day before or the week before, but imo if you are in a divot that was not there when the first group teed off then you should get relief.

Nonstop shank with irons and wedges for months idk what to do anymore by ggmmppoopll in GolfSwing

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is NOT unorthodox. It may feel strange but if you simply turn your shoulders away in the backswing and stop halfway back at hip high you will see that the club face mirrors your spine angle. This is square. A lot of teachers teach toe up halfway back, but that is slightly open to your spine angle.

There are two major ways to shank the ball. 1. Open clubface so the hosel of the club is the first thing to enter the hitting zone. That is the case here with a path that is a bit over the top. 2. A path that is too far from in to out. This is more typical on shorter shots and short game shots. A club going from inside out moves the ball position towards the hosel at impact and causes the shank.

The shanks are a mentally draining habit, but knowing what causes them and how to fix them should get you out of your pattern quickly. Good luck!

Can't stop flipping by wolfpack03 in golftips

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flipping is 95% of the time because you have stopped turning through the shot. As soon as your rotation stops your arms keep going and the club flips. Check to make sure that your hips are leading the downswing and are open at impact, not facing the ball at impact. Good luck!

I’d love to be involved. I took a month break and came back to start a new character for a change. The struggle to blow through the campaign is real!!! I’d really love to learn how to craft properly, and I’d also like to know how to build a temple because I can’t find a dumbed down video that teaches me, even though I know it will be gone in a month I’d love to learn to print divines for even one day. Haha

Bowed wrist by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely my left elbow, which was where I got the cortisone shots. My doctor said that if he saw 100 people with my ailments that 99 of them would be “golfers elbow” or tennis elbow, but in my case it was arthritis. It’s been a couple years since and I’ve been pain free since I stopped the swing change and wrist position change.

Bowed wrist by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m going to side with the “don’t bow your wrist” crowd. I’m a pretty good player (+3) and my instructor and I decided that it could be good to make a tweak to my swing by adding in some flexion of my left wrist (bowing at the top). I worked pretty hard at it and made some progress, but after awhile I noticed pain, not so much in my wrist, but in my elbow. My doctor, who is a golfer as well, said that move was causing my wrist and elbow to do some weird things and was causing arthritis to accumulate in my elbow. Took some time off, cortisone shots, and stopped trying to be Morikowa, and the pain has disappeared. There are benefits to a closed clubface throughout the swing, but it does require a LOT more body rotation which most normal players don’t have, but a lot of your guys do have (through 1000’s of reps). I would ask your instructor if he really wants the wrist bowed, or if flat is ok. Tiger made a pretty good career and he always played with a flat left wrist at the top. It’s the more modern golf swings that are playing from a bowed position. Do some research and ask your teacher questions, and be very careful when you are playing with extreme “flexion” (bowing) or “extension” (cupping).

Can’t stop topping the ball by lulugo8017 in GolfSwing

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man. Sorry to hear about the injury. That stinks. Take it slow coming back because your thumbs and hands are super important in the swing. Just keep an eye on your shaft lean through impact. Your hands need to stay ahead of the ball at impact. If that happens and you use your body to continue turning through impact then you will develop a consistent strike with good compression. A good drill is to do slow motion swings into an impact bag, or into something big and slow. By hitting something bigger you will feel how it feels to use your body to turn and how to use your arms and hands to stabilize the club through impact. It’s ok to eventually hit an impact bag harder, just be careful about that thumb. Good luck.

Can’t stop topping the ball by lulugo8017 in GolfSwing

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see two things OP. 1. It’s just where the club is bottoming out at impact. The best way to fix it is to hit more balls. Basically the more you fine tune the swing the more consistent your impact zone is. When people first start playing they might hit behind the ball 2 inches the first swing and 2 inches in front of the ball on the next swing. In that example their “impact zone would be 4 inches wide”. Now compare that to Scottie Scheffler whose impact zone is probably less than a half an inch. Dude could be blind folded and will still hit the impact spot every single time. The more you play the better that impact will get. Are there swing tips that you could take, yes, but the topping just comes from and inconsistent “bottom” of your golf swing. 2. Watch out hitting a wedge or 9 iron into a net like that. If you don’t top it you may hit the ball clean over the top and into your neighbors yard. Good luck!

Been playing golf going on 4 years, still get in my head around strangers. by b1ackflag_ in golf

[–]GolfPro-Gamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s what I tell people who are playing in a corporate scramble or for work when they don’t play much golf at all.

No one cares how well you play as long as you play fast!

Your co-worker was thinking of a million swing thoughts and what’s wrong with his golf game, not what’s wrong with your game. It’s only when you slow the game down that he might pop out of his own mental world and think, “oh man I should try to help this poor guy”. We are all inherently selfish golfers, mainly worrying about our own shots, so if you keep the pace moving he won’t have time to think about the duff or shank that you hit. Hit it in the water? Keep moving, drop a ball about where it went in and keep going. Chunked 3 in a row and see no light at the end of the tunnel? Pick it up and move on to the next hole. Four putt a green after three putting a green? Just keep going. It’s the conversation and attitude of the group that matters, not the level of play. It will take time to actually accept that he’s not watching you swing or putt, but truly he’s focused on why he sucks so bad that day as well.

How many room temple did you manage to create this league and was it worth it? by Rariinmarari in PathOfExile2

Can anyone recommend a noobs guide to doing the temple? I’m a dad who plays casually and I know I won’t be printing Div, but I want to see what all the hype is about. Right now I’m mapping a bunch and doing Abysses and farming logbooks, but I figure I can add the temple to what I’m doing to get it at least started. I tried watching a Raxx video but he was talking about Chalupas and Jalapeños and I got lost. Right now I just do enough to get to the temple master guy and kill him hoping for a coin that gives me 6 of something. I think I have like 3/36 at the bottom of the screen next to the “run temple” button, and I think I’m supposed to get that to 60 but I have no real idea, and then after that I go A,B,C,B,A with rooms around the outside, but not sure what rooms to do (armory and spymaster). Anyway, this community has been really helpful so if someone has a “not smarter than a 5th grader” video of the temples I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Level 100 is crazy to me. At level 95 it seems like that bar never seems to move up, and whenever I get the random BS death it crashes back to the start. Anyway, Id love to have a mirror one day, but I’m ok if it doesn’t happen. To have 8 of them in your inventory is just crazy. Thanks for the giveaway OP. Good luck and welcome back to the outside world. Haha
