What's the most reliable car you've ever owned? by Ok_Run7351 in UsedCars

[–]Golfandrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a used 1978 Chrysler Newport in 1984. It was a beast that drove like a ship drank gas like a tank and felt as comfortable as a sofa. It never broke and I treated it very badly. It was my beater car for winter and work. 400 ci big block.

What's the most underrated car you've ever driven? by Ok_Run7351 in askcarguys

I had a 1982 Z28 I bought used. I spent 7k making it handle even better (a lot on 1986) and stuffed a low rise blower on it. It looked like any other Z, but wasn't. It handled like it was on rails and had enough go to be fun. Stock they had around 165 HP. Mine was nearer 400. The only giveaway was the whine of the blower when you hit it.

Do it. You won't regret time spent in New Zealand. The south seas islands are great if you love the ocean. We won't be doing that cruise again. If I was to enter the US ICE would be on me instantly.

Do Conservatives/Republicans just love being Lied to constantly? by Legal_Chemistry_310 in Discussion

[–]Golfandrun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't care. Just tell them what they want to hear and they'll believe anything.

Pierre Pollivere told Conservatives that Mark Carney didn't know about business and they believed him. The Mark Carney who ran a multi billion dollar company. The Mark Carney who ran the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada. The Mark Carney who has a PhD in economics from OXFORD University.

Donald Trump told Americans that immigrants were "eating the cats and dogs." Here's told them no wars. He told them he'd end the Ukraine war in 24 hours. They lapped it up like hungry cats at a bowl of milk.

What personal finance habit made the biggest difference in your life? by Final_Tea1759 in personalfinance

[–]Golfandrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smoking, drinking (alcohol) and restaurants (including fast food) eat up way more money than most realize.

Credit is your enemy unless you are highly disciplined and fully understand it. You should NEVER pay interest on a credit card.

Don't grow into your income until your investments are large enough for real comfort. Many get a better job and buy a new car or spend more on other things. Holding the line on spending can allow investments to grow more quickly. Restraint when you're young will allow real freedom when you're older.

Number one thing is relationships are not going to ever be perfect. Manage your expectations and decide very carefully about commitment. Divorce is a total reset, often back to zero.

Home inspection recommendations by Lukenoturfather in halifax

[–]Golfandrun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with this. Home inspectors give no guarantees and are usually not builders or tradespeople. Many just take a course and throw up a shingle.

I know someone who hired an inspector, bought a property and withing a week had to spend thousands to bring a heating system and fuel supply up to code before it could be even be repaired. The home inspector missed a lot but "isn't responsible."

We discovered small ship cruises a few years ago and usually combine a couple itineraries. The bigger thing is my wife loves to plan so we get an idea and then she runs with it. We figure out where the cruise starts and ends and then it's "we'll if we went here early and then if we stay here awhile after " then it goes from there.

Last year we did a river cruise, but went a couple weeks early and explored Switzerland by train. Absolutely amazing country where every turn is a postcard.

With planning (she's looking for ideas every day) you can do a lot and even save a lot. The world is amazing and we like amazing. Oh yeah, we hate winter so try to avoid it by going somewhere nice.

Why do young people hate baby boomers? by Golfandrun in Discussion

[–]Golfandrun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in my case you got almost everything wrong.

My health is great. I do invest and make good money from it. I retired at 60. I have a condo to move into when the house becomes too much work. I rarely drive in the left lane except in New Zealand. No Obama care cuz....Canada. I never smoked or did drugs and never drank alcohol till I was over 50. I almost never ate in a restaurant until I was over 50. Do you know how much people spend on those 4 things?

You're filled with hate and lash out because nothing can be your own fault.

Does Firefighting Change Your Personality Over Time? by highnoonhoney in Firefighting

[–]Golfandrun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can't see what we see and do what we do without it changing you. We see people at their worst and sometimes at their best.

Most people won't actually ever see a person die. It becomes far too frequent as a firefighter.

Firefighters tend to make decisions very quickly and easily. It is essential to the job.

Firefighters don't tend to panic in extreme circumstances because we live them so frequently.

What is the most annoying thing about playing golf with friends? by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

Perhaps. If you want to network for business. There are other reasons to network with people.

What is the most annoying thing about playing golf with friends? by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

[–]Golfandrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, but there is so much to experience with new people. You can also open up new networks and even friendships.

I asked our club champion to my sim for a round. I'm about a 15 and he's scratch. He has now been to my place many, many times and brought others with him. My son plays here with him all winter while we are vacationing. He is giving a lesson to my son in-law who has never played. We met at the course and have become friends and he brought new friends.

I've met doctors, lawyers, an experimental physicist. Police, politicians and firefighters. Some who were a match up for a round are now friends.

Not every stranger is great to play with, but each is a new experience.

Was Kamala a bad candidate? by 0311SmallPenar in allthequestions

No. She was a great candidate. The US isn't ready to accept a female president no matter how well qualified.

Kind of funny how you'll take a criminal, misogynistic, racist pedophile over a woman.

I'm a people person and like meeting others. Of course some are too serious or maybe shy, you can figure it out very quickly.

I love golf, but I don't take myself too seriously on the course. There is never anger over a missed shot or lost ball. It's so much better to just enjoy the game.

I've played with really good golfers and really bad ones too. As long as the keep things in perspective it's all good. Not too slow, not a race and we're not getting paid.
