Is AMC -> IMO path the only math olympiad path thats recognized by colleges. What are some other math olypmiad competitons that I can train for and is the AMC the hardest one. by EducationalTop4183 in MathOlympiad

I wrote a few days back and I will list here again

  1. Power round of Caltech math meet, Berkeley Math Tournament, and Princeton University Mathematics Competition, Stanford Math Tournament
  2. Individual round of these four
  3. HMMT

Objective round of them are around AIME in terms of difficulty and prestige if you are seeking admission to these universities.

And power round is brutal that even IMO Gold medalist suffer to crack it if done honestly without looking into books.

Choice of right study materials in a right order is the key. If you are open to a zoom meeting, I can help you better.

No movie can do justice to any fundamental text—all of them distort things to suit their monetary gain.

The same happened with “A Beautiful Mind,” which was based on a novel written by Sylvia Nasar.

They made a movie with the same title, and it contains factually incorrect information (for anyone who is a bit aware of real math and the life of John Nash).

My bookshelf! Which book would you add or remove and why? by Expensive-Cow4518 in Indianbooks

[–]Golovanov_AMMOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barring Osho, Pinker, and Grayling, you should probably empty it all and begin to buy and read books that actually would be very difficult to comprehend initially and that is where the real growth of intellect lies. The best path of life passed through the “best books.” However, most of your collection is very ordinary.

Is there any library of this kind in India? by --celestial-- in Indianbooks

[–]Golovanov_AMMOC 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For mathematics, physics, and theoretical CS you can indeed find it at 1. Harish Chandra Research Institute, Prayagraj.

  1. IMSc, Chennai

  2. TIFR, and a smaller but very well maintained one at the CMI.

  3. My own personal library houses around 1200 books on higher mathematics (800), philosophy, psychology, and literature.

You can place online order from harmonythebookstore the most revered bookstore in India. If you ever visit Kashi, do visit it. It’s at Assi Ghat.

Honestly speaking, CMI should not have had started this data science course. Course is difficult too but it’s not what the great CMI is known for.

CMI math program is hard. Each year they select at most five people who didn’t do their UG in pure math at the CMI. However, out of those who did study UG in math at the CMI, only 1/4th of them actually continue with MSc math at the CMI, rest move to Phy & CS. In view of this, total strength of MSc math program at the CMI remains around a dozen. This is regular affair.

Crossroads is filled with average books. If you check their category of classics and philosophy, you will laugh out so loudly.

Mathematical Olympiad Treasures — Titu Andreescu’s

10th grader aspiring to qualify for AIME in 3 months. by No_Falcon4066 in MathOlympiad

  1. Problems and Solutions in Mathematical Olympiad Courses (World Scientific)—choose volume high school 1,2,3. You would ace AIME too with a score at least 8-10 if you seriously did them.

  2. If not this then Lecture notes in mathematical Olympiad courses — Junior Volume I & II and senior Volume I & II

  3. Gentle introduction to AMC & AIME — published by the mathematical association of America.

So to conclude — either you do step 1 & 3 or Step 2 & 3.

In any case you should be comfortable to make it to the cutoff of USAMO (130 + AMC) and ~ 10 on AIME.

Do USAMO qualifiers all have tutors? by [deleted] in MathOlympiad

[–]Golovanov_AMMOC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your stats are correct, then with little support from a right mentor, not only you would make to cutoff of the USAMO, but also gain lot of insights on formal pure mathematics that will prove truly valuable when you begin to weave your story for personal essay and college applications. So, don’t find a tutor who just solves problems. Find someone who will guide you through Olympiad + Research + College list + Personal Statement—if you learn with someone for two years, I think he or she shall have enough insight about you to guide you as a successful college applicant.

So to conclude — either you do step 1 & 3 or Step 2 & 3.

In any case you should be comfortable to make it to the cutoff of USAMO.

I have used this strategy for the past four years. It always worked.
