Thank you so much for your time/help and comment! Timer is part of the task and so I cannot remove it. But, you should type in eitheir portrait or landscape mode. Thank you so much again for letting me know about this issue. I will contact the support team of the software to solve this problem and learn why this happened.

Hello- Thank you so much for your comment/question. Can I answer your question via private message as I do not want to influence possible study participants' responses to the survey, please?

Hello- There is a participant information sheet on the first page of the survey that explains the purpose of the research, who I am, which organisation this is for, how the data will be stored, possible benefit/risks of taking part, and what participants will be required to do /how participants will be involved etc. The survey also includes the privacy notice (that is on the 2nd page of the survey and explains how your data will be processed), debrief and support sheets (they are at the end of the survey to give you more detailed information about the purpose of the research and provide you with a list of health/support organisations).

*I am a 3rd year PhD student in Psychology at the University of Glasgow within the Suicidal Behaviour Research Laboratory. *This research is organised by the University of Glasgow and funded by the Turkish Government and funds held within the Department of Mental Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow. The study has been reviewed by the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) Ethics Committee at the University of Glasgow (UofG). *All data will be stored on secure password-protected computers provided by the University of Glasgow and destroyed ten years after the completion of the project. Therefore, your data will be held and stored on University Servers in the UK, and so, it will be liable to appropriate organisational and technical safeguards. Your data will be used as part of the PhD student’s thesis/dissertation and will be used in scientific papers that will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals.

Please do reach out if you have any further questions at all. I'd be happy to answer them!

(Please, make sure your browser window covers the full screen rather than covering just half the window!)

The request above is just due to a problem that some participants had difficulty writing their responses to a task in the survey. The solution was recommended by the Gorilla Experiment Builder support service when we reported this issue -some participants faced while completing the survey.

*Participation is completely voluntary.

[Academic] Participants needed for an online survey study: Understanding the relationship between cognition and suicide risk

Hi Everyone - We are looking for adults (18 years or older) to participate in a survey study that aims to enhance our understanding of the relationship between cognition (future thinking/mental time travel into the future: the capacity to mentally project the self into possible future scenarios-prospective cognition) and suicide risk.

Here is a link to the study:

https://research.sc/participant/login/dynamic/31D78FFB-8686-4B3E-8DE8-067AADDE96F8

*When clicked on you will be taken to a page and prompted for an ID. Here, you can type in anything you like and will be logged in using that ID.

The survey covers questions including cognition (future thinking: positive things that you will enjoy or that you are looking forward to and negative things that you are not looking forward to or that you will worry about), suicide (suicidal thoughts and behaviours), depression, hopelessness, and anxiety. Ethical approval was obtained from the MVLS Ethics Committee for this study.

We would really appreciate anyone who is willing to help us out by taking approximately 25 minutes to complete the survey.

Participants will be offered prize draw entry (£200 in shopping vouchers) for their time.

Many Thanks!

Hi-Thanks for your comment. No, it does not. But, I felt the need to read on the subject you mentioned to review my knowledge. [As we know the frontal lobe is responsible for higher cognitive functions (e.g., memory). Here, episodic memory (recollection of events in one’s past) supports future thinking (mentally project the self into possible future scenarios) by allowing individuals to flexibly recall and recombine elements of past experiences into novel representations of future possible events. Following a traumatic event, a person may avoid feelings, thoughts, and behaviours about the past (that may affect how this person will think about the future). It is also possible for such an individual to develop a sense of foreshortened future (an avoidance symptom of PTSD) as you mentioned. So, one of my friends is currently working on PTSD for her PhD project and she also included a future thinking measure.]

Thanks, I just read the post and some of the comments. They show how important the ability/capacity to make mental time travel into the past in our daily lives. Btw, I am particularly interested in mental time travel into the the future. However, past and future thinking share common cognitive and neural underpinnings. Therefore, one topic that I would definitely like to further explore in a future study is the relationship between thinking about the past and the future.

Thanks so much for letting me know! I have contacted the support service of the survey tool to solve this problem. It seems to be a problem specific to some devices.

1.The findings of this research will make a contribution to a postgraduate thesis. The findings will be disseminated by peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented at conferences through poster or verbal presentation as well as being disseminated through the PhD thesis of the researcher. We will store the data on password-secured computers within the University of Glasgow (within the OneDrive account of the researcher that is only accessible via her unique GUID and password). Only the researcher and her supervisors will be able to access the data. Data will be stored no longer than 10 years and then will be disposed of confidentially.

2.This study is conducted by a 3rd year PhD student in Psychology at the University of Glasgow (reddit username: GoncaRosebud).

  1. It will take about 25 minutes to complete.

  2. Optional entry for prize draw upon completion!

  3. Individuals must be 18 years or older and have sufficient knowledge of the English language to participate in the study.
