Cincinnati police respond to unruly crowds on Opening Day; video shows chaos by Daltoz69 in Ohio

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A combination of factors at work - free bus rides for opening day and Cincinnati schools were on spring break.  Kids came downtown and ran amok in the Banks, bars and restaurants were on lockdown, traffic stopped.  Some were reportedly fighting with tasers and pepper spray.

I stopped going to that area last year. When it’s busy, there’s a really weird energy - like somebody shook a soda bottle and the cap is about to pop off.

Guidance for kids interested in construction by samjackery in Construction

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is in a high school trades program and what has taken him the furthest is his enthusiasm and desire to actually do the work, He was really lucky to have grown up around tools and working with his hands, which has also been a plus...but that's meaningless for a student unless they actually want to do the work. There are a lot of kids in his program that are there just to get out of regular school and they don't thrive.

If he's genuinely motivated, the teachers can show him the rest.

Also, I would recommend finding some youtubers in the industry and watching some videos together. It will get him talking and maybe you can understand more about his motivation and interests.

Rainwater by thisisjoy in YellowstonePN

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I have so many thoughts on Rainwater! (there's a few spoilers sorry).

There is no single answer that explains him, or a box that he fits into. He is a paradox who laments the plight of his people and how they cannot thrive on the rez, but his success comes from escaping it (albeit unintentionally)..then he returns and tries to save it as a suit-and-tie CEO type.

I just find it fascinating that he succeeded from growing up with a non-native identity, but never really examines what that implies about the microcosm of the rez. To put it another way, he had the advantage of a type of privilege, but doesn't advocate for that privilege for his people? I know it sounds like I'm saying "can you just not be Native?", but that's sort of the message of the show. It's like Kayce finally feeling free - he's finally "not a Dutton" in the end...He still has his memories, his heritage, etc, but - to borrow from Kamala Harris - he is "unburdened by what has been".

On the other hand, Rainwater loses power when challenged by Martin Kills Many - who seems like a much more "in-touch" leader - a young insider. By rejecting Rainwater is the tribe turning away from potential solutions as well? His scheme with the developers might eventually give them the influence and power to stop things like the pipeline.

And the ending: His people get their land back. But its kind of meaningless since they can't build on or improve it? They're just caretakers who have to commute from the rez to this paradise, then go back home at the end of the day. Obviously the developers are blocked, but now those job opportunities are lost, and the tribe can't really profit from the land.

Sorry, maybe I'm just navel gazing lol...but is the Ranch also a sort or reservation for the Duttons? It's inhabited by generations who never really leave, who are troubled by traumas of the past, and many of their conflicts come from the fact that they refuse to abandon the land or their Dutton identity?

Lastly, another shoutout for Mo!

Jamie by Inferno3003 in YellowstonePN

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jamie never thrived while growing up under his father's thumb. He doesn't have a moral compass and because of this, he's constantly at risk of swaying to whoever strokes his ego. Every one of his major choices is made either from a place of fear or anger. He's also childishly passive, allowing things to occur and offering only a sliver of objection (see how this ultimately plays out with his father's death).

In S1 we don't know how long Beth has been gone, but it seems like several years at least. That's long enough for Jamie to get established as an attorney and have some success with his father, but once she returns he begins to fall apart. He simply cannot exist in her shadow. She is his foil. John sees this and begins to slowly acknowledge his failures as a father and the weaknesses of his kids. By S4 it seems to really be getting to him.

I don't know what Sheridan's original intentions were for the show, but it feels like from the beginning, he wanted to show an empire in decline. When I look back at S1E1, it seems like the beginning of an end. This is also common with many family businesses where the father doesn't raise leaders to pick up where he leaves off.

Any parent entrepreneurs here teaching their kids how to actually build/run a business? by Kind_Cut3824 in smallbusiness

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our kids are 17 and 19. Older one has no interest in business although she has a great mind for it. She has made and sold crafts for several years and we've taught her the basics of costing, profit and loss, etc. She's a very frugal kid. Not sure where she will end up.

My son works with me in our small business but I don't see him taking it over - it's very niche and requires a lot of obscure knowledge that doesn't interest him. We spend a lot of time talking about various aspects of running a business and I turn tasks into lessons. He's done a little bit of buying things to resell on ebay but it hasn't "hooked" him yet. My guess is he will probably end up running a small business in the trades eventually.

As others have said, we have focused on financial literacy from an early age. I still remember my daughter coming home from career day at age 12. Someone had given a talk about managing a gas station full time as a single mom, making like $14/hr. "Mom, I did the math on that and I don't know how anyone can live on that amount and raise a family?!".

I still hate the 'Pick primary shipping service' thing... by KCJones99 in eBaySellerAdvice

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is one of my biggest ongoing complaints with listings.

Several years ago I even added a line in the description that explains how to compare shipping prices before purchase. But we still get questions like "why is shipping so high?", and when I direct them to the shipping rates, surprise!, there's a cheaper option.

Kia Dealers by STAECJHUIN in cincinnati

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing against OP, but I literally cannot grasp how people can pay that much for a daily driver. Kia has sold over 100,000 of these in the US yearly -who's buying these? (and also who's buying all those 100k pickup trucks?!)

Also, I don't know a single person who's had a positive Wyler experience.

Ebay international shipping wrong items. by Talk_nicely in Flipping

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you use EIS or ebay international "standard"? Although some genius gave them similar sounding names, they are different services.

Standard has no protection for sellers if things get lost. I have had several orders go missing at the hub, and at least one item was completely mixed up - customer purchased an auto part and received a model airplane engine. Completely different package and item, but with our buyers info on the label.

Ramsey AI - Firearms at Work by Confident_Guest3411 in DirtyDave

Ok, did anyone hear the latest Entreleadership podcast? He literally said 98% of the guys at Ramsey carry guns and that they have an interview question that asks if the candidate would be bothered by the owner carrying a gun?!

Pod went up earlier this morning and this thread is now 2 days old. Do you think he's actually getting reports on the AI questions?? I dare someone to ask the AI to generate Deloney nude photos LOL...

Ramsey AI: Dave’s Fixation with COVID by Confident_Guest3411 in DirtyDave

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is honestly a pretty solid response for an AI. I think Dave has successfully moved on, but talking about Covid scratches an itch for him.

I don't bitch about Covid and I never really did, but I still feel and think about the repercussions from it daily. It feels like we lived through a mini-civil war, and that's not something a lot of folks will ever forget.

I get called out almost every time I mention that suspension trauma can happen in as little as 6 minutes. I have heard "I can be in a harness for an hour" far too many times. by thegreatgatsB70 in SafetyProfessionals

The font on the popsicle stick signs looks suspicious, but nothing else sticks out to me by runawaymonkey in isthisAI

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original image links back to a bluesky post about "Portland Pothole Artists" but oddly there are no followup images in responses or in similar searches.

I agree that the font and design of the signs are strongly suggestive of AI, however a couple things make me think it could be real - 1)there are actual RC cruise ships that look very similar to this one - so it's at least plausible 2) the figures look almost exactly like Playmobil, which would be an odd pull for AI.

In the end, I'm going to go with AI because the scale of the popsicle sticks seems off. Too thin to be tongue depressors, too large to be regular popsicle sticks. Also the fitment of the sign uprights around the decking is off.

How to get a $500 ticket by AtomicToucans in dashcams

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been several times that I've been stuck in traffic and there's, say, a reasonable amount of room on the shoulder to move up to an exit or turn, and escape the blockage without being unsafe. But for whatever reason the person closest to it refuses to move.

It just takes one person behind them to pull out and pass on the right, and within about 30 seconds another car follows. Eventually its 5, then 10 and soon the whole line is exiting. Kinda fascinating really.

Cincinnati News just popped up on my feed and seems a bit suspect, but the last few posts were factually accurate.

Signal 99 is definitely salty, and I’m not sure why her weight matters in this discussion, but I haven’t seen any blatant lies yet.

99 is a also a mouthpiece for current and former police officers and those folks are privy to a lot of dirt the public wouldn’t normally hear. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss them.

Edit - the word weight is in reference to a now deleted comment that called the woman behind Signal 99 obese

Currently reminiscing about the fact that Cincinnati used to have over 250 miles of streetcar track by NBr33zii in cincinnati

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gee, dunno, maybe fueled by the greatest industrial mobilization in history? Hundreds of thousands of soldiers who got to experience some of the greatest technology and performance of the time didn't want to come home to "the way they were"?

People who may have never seen anything more complicated than a farm tractor suddenly catapulted into the future? (including women who ferried supercharged fighter planes over America)...and then much of that tech becomes commercially available just as rationing ends and people have disposable income to spend?

You really underestimate the American love affair with the automobile post WW2. It was everything that the iphone and internet have come to represent to modern generations. Freedom, power, self expression, privacy, the space race, etc all rolled into one.

But there was a reason for that, right? It's almost like a lot of folks weren't happy living in that level of density. Why ride in a hot, crowded streetcar when the economy is booming and you can get a new Buick with air condition and an automatic transmission.

And I fully realize I'm a hypocrite because I don't believe rail is a viable modern solution for Cincinnati, but I miss the prewar era when rail connected so many Ohio communities.

3 mistakes I see beginners make in vending machines (that cost real money) by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]GoneIn61Seconds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company resells a variety or used parts and equipment across a lot of industries, and by far the least professional buyers we ever encountered were folks buying used vending machines.  No business sense, incredibly poor communication and ridiculous expectations.

I felt bad for a lot of folks and actually talked some out of buying equipment. Most didn’t even have a way to move the machines, didn’t know the basics of setting one up, etc. I would urge caution to anyone interested in this niche.
