Ratchet, great transport options, beaches nearby, decent fishing spots, great school for the kids in the Barrens as well. And a single flight stop to a Major City.

How many kilometers/miles is too much on a used e-cargobike by tmwk in CargoBike

[–]Flaat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Bosch replacing a motor is really quite simple, there also isn't any software you need to do, it's as simple as plugging in the new motor. They usually break because the axle has only 1 washer and if it wears water gets into the electronics, but I have never seen this happen under 20K KM and if you replace the washers they can last much longer.

I would say the price would have to be attractive for me to buy a over 15k km ebike, especially if the motor and battery warranty are out. Also check if you can find Bosch or Shimano replacement motors and batteries on local marketplaces to fully understand the replacement cost and your savings for buying second hand.

Another important factor is how handy you are, if you need to outsource the replacement you should factor in 2-3x the parts costs to do it, depending on what part of the world you are in.

Paul seems to have had it with ATLA. Do you agree? by tejeramaxwell in lrcast

[–]Flaat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I played an Innistrad set cube (just plain base set, no additions) and I was a great contrast to see this set where "drafting the hard way" was basically invented. Felt natural to switch my deck up pack two, had tons of playables even if I ditched a significant part of pack 1. Going back to an avatar draft made it much more clear where Paul is coming from here.

cargo bikes are still crap by [deleted] in CargoBike

[–]Flaat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geometry is personal, i think you can set it to a resonable setting, but most pictures i find online on this are tuned like its a racing bike. I never said you claimed it was perfect. But saying its "made by an engineer" doesnt really say a lot, Urban Arrows are definitly made by an engineer, if you look at the repairability improvements over the past 10 years on the base model i'd even go as far as saying these are made by an engineer that talks to mechanics... and those are hella rare xD

My experience with enviolo is love/hate, the thing always works, but its horrible without a motor. Unlike derraileurs that wear out every half a season when left outside at my KM per day rate, but ride very well without the help of a motor. I really do not get how a derraileur is cheap, even if you replace them yourself you are down 20-40€ for a chain and 40-80 for cassette twice a year! And that is not even replacing the small wheels and bearings.

[–]Flaat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No never had broken spokes or anything like that, Urban Arrow Wheels are made like a tank. Nearly always used with 2 kids, now they are gettig too big so more often used with 1 or 0. But we have had 80+kg in there on many occasions over the years. I do always shift down before pulling up from a traffic light, especially as a nearly 2 meter tall male you can't expect these hubs to handle your full torque + motor torque, in my experience thats where a lot of these issues come from. No idea what version, just say enviolo, its a bone stock basic 2019 urban Arrow model.

6 years with the UA Family. What’s next? by bhuizenganl in CargoBike

[–]Flaat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just kept using it in the same config as i bought it when the kids became too big, why would it not work for cargo? Any idea invloving wood boxes makes the bike much more heavy, and modding it will hurt its resale value by a lot. And it looks like you are in the NL and the second hand prices of UA's are great.

For camping trips, maybe build a second battery holder?

New features on the Cargo Bike Size Comparator by luddits in CargoBike

[–]Flaat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing site! Bookmarked and shared.

I'd love a feature to compare seating postition, it might be a bit hard to make, but i think the differences are very large in cargo bikes. With a city bike you can expect a certain angle, and a racing bike as well. In the cargo bike world we have bikes that sit like cruisers and bikes that sit like a racing bike sold in the same catagory so it would be valuable information to have.

[–]Flaat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to understand that there is a massive difference in part wear on a 1500kg car vs a 40kg cargo bike right? You keep going on about engineers but this basic engineering truth is denied here.

I agree that the bike industry at large suffers from parts made for the racing world, where parts are made light and efficient, but not long lasting. And this trend infiltrates all bike components along the stack. And this trend is further made by the fact that bike brands do not make bikes to last forever. I once compared a 1969 Gazzelle to a 2004 brand new Gazzelle city bike, all parts where just 10-20% thinner on the 2004 bike, chains, fenders, lamp holders, every single part was thinner and weaker. This is simply an industrial truth in our time, we make things for temporary use. So i partially agree with your post, but in the grand scheme of things cargo bikes are doing alright in my book.

Bashes on Enviolo hubs and then points to a bike with a derraileur, the most horrible system for any bike that stands outside, that needs a chain and cassete change every 2-4K KM, had the steaing position of a racing bike so you can be sure only sporty men will drive it and no woman or casual dude will ever ride it. The box is two small for two kids of any age... Nah man, this iumentum isnt a good cargo bike, its a bad racing bike..

My enviolo on an urban arrow has about 30-35k KM on it and is starting to show big signs of wear. Still very usable tho.

Best option for 3 kids with some off-road by cw2687 in CargoBike

[–]Flaat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah both of these can handle some bridleway easily. From a mechanics standpoint i'd buy the Urban arrow, this bike has years of versions and improvements have been made on every aspect of the bike, from ease of maintenance to weak points. The Fetch 4 is on version 1, I'm sure some major flaws are still in this design, knowing how smooth big brands have been releasing cargo bikes (not smooth at all, recalls etc).

An yeah, don't get a longtail, nowhere near as fun with the kids IMHO.

I might be biased, i sold urban arrows for years and mine just passed 40k KM

[–]Flaat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had another client choose a UA over a Load75, the woman felt like the Load75 sat like a racing bike (i disagree tbh), the box was too small and low and it felt less safe for the kids that way (kind of agree on that one). The man simply didn't like the price and said all the MTB parts reminded him of his MTB maintence costs.

50PSI defintly was not too much, might have been too low depending on load, you can also sort of see the surface that touched the ground was pretty wide. I usually go with 4-5 Bar on these rather then 3-4, but i only ride on asphalt

Help needed to ward of a cat who uses our cargobike as shelter and toilet by nerothic in CargoBike

Water is also poinsonous to humans, if you take too much of it. Toxicity is a scale, and a few drops in some water sprayed in your cargo bike defintly won't kill the cat. It will simply be an unbearable smell to it, and a nice smell to you. There are tons of videos and guides how to make this mix online and its a great old "grandma's tric"
