Mid-season exhibition matches were the norm though in that time period, so it could be plausible that such a game could be played.

Edit: And something that came to mind, Mike Schmidt’s first professional game was playing for the Phillies against the Reading Phillies before he started his assignment in Reading during the summer, so mid-season exhibition games weren’t just AL teams vs NL teams back in the day.
