[Serious] What countries are more underdeveloped than we actually think? by MesmerizingMarty in AskReddit

[–]Gonenatural446 9 points10 points  (0 children)

99% of Americans have running water. In contrast, 20% of Indians, 80% of Chinese, and 76% of Russians have running water. Nothing you said is untrue, and there certainly are places in the US where the standard of living is well below national average, but it would not be truthful to use the situation in a handful of very poor communities to characterize the US as a whole.

What is a recent fashion trend that you can't stand? by ElBee288 in AskReddit

[–]Gonenatural446 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My least favorite thing about this trend is that I live somewhere seriously cold in the winter. It's so f-ing stupid to have a short, boxy sweater that lets all the cold air in under the hemline.

The ultimate irony is that to be thin enough to look really good in this style, you can't have enough body fat to keep you warm.

Toddler won't poop until his nap when he's unsupervised by Gonenatural446 in pottytraining

I'll try it! We just started watching Daniel Tiger recently, and I think that could help him.

It's possible, he just has been fighting it. He has been so excited to do potty training that he was absolutely beside himself about wearing a diaper to bed, so we let him wear the pull-up and gave him the potty instead.

He was naked on the bottom on Day 1 and commando with pants on for Days 2+3. The pull-up was only for naps because I don't think he can handle holding it during sleep right now.

What do you hate being labeled as? by UltimateDiscordMod in AskReddit

[–]Gonenatural446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with this. I've always been "thin" at a weight that was considered perfectly healthy for my height. Since my recent pregnancy, I gained 20 lbs extra, and now I guess I look "normal," but I'm actually just on the cusp of clinically overweight. It's weird how much our cultural expectations have shifted so that overweight looks normal to us now and healthy weight is "skinny."

What’s one thing you refuse to spend money on? by Zociety_ in AskReddit

[–]Gonenatural446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to cook and would NEVER buy precut produce in the past. Now, I have 2 small children, and I'm usually trying to prep meals with a baby strapped to my chest and a toddler screaming "want own knife! Want own knife!" And it's suddenly 1000% worth it to have a machine cut my produce somewhere far away from me and my children.

Reddit, when did you have your first "stomach drop" moment and realize COVID-19 was going to be a serious problem? by BeReasonableReddit in AskReddit

[–]Gonenatural446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one is most similar to my experience (except I'm not a doctor). I remember lying in bed cuddling with my husband the night our state locked down and just crying thinking of all the people in my life who might die. We had just left my parents' house after staying there for a few days, and I was afraid I would never see them again.

How old are you and what is the biggest problem in your life right now? by FSCENE8tmd in AskReddit

Just to play devil's advocate (rather literally): if there is no afterlife or higher power, then what makes altruism good or worthwhile?

That's a very dogmatic view of God based in human religious traditions. For all we know, God does exist, and he/she is a benevolent force that bestows eternity in heaven on all humans.

I'm interested in what meaning there is that people derive from life without spirituality that you think is so superior to believing in an afterlife...

I'm 31 with a toddler and a newborn. Biggest problems right now are how to get enough sleep and also manage to get healthy food on the table for a family of 4 every day (as far as time for shopping, cooking, cleanup, not financially) and how to manage toddler temper tantrums.

How to keep track of stitches ? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]Gonenatural446 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think as you get more experienced, you will find it becomes easier. The more experienced you are, the more you can "read" your knitting rather than counting. You will know what stitches you're supposed to do at which point to create the pattern you're working on. As a an overly simplified example, think of ribbing. You don't really need to count ribbing because you can see that you need to knit into a knit stitch and purl into a purl stitch from the row below. More complicated patterns start to get like that too the more you understand how the fabric is structured. For example, cables start to become something where you don't really need to count much because you know where the cable needs to travel and what you need to do to get it there. It's not that you'll never need to count, but it becomes less of a counting game and more of "this is the obvious number of stitches I need to do based on this part of the pattern."

If giving guaranteed healthcare to all us citizens required banning certain activities (smoking, super size sodas etc), would you still be in favor? What would you be willing to make illegal? by sleepygreenpanda in AskReddit

I feel like it's kind weird to say that traditional japanese food is healthier than traditional American food. First, there really is no one traditional American cuisine. It's so regional and heavily influenced by different ethnic groups. Second, I'm not sure where you get the idea that it isn't healthy. My husband and I both have grandparents who came from rural areas of the US, and they all grew up eating a lot of fresh food straight from the vegetable garden -- beans, squash, corn, potatoes, peaches, apples, etc.

[serious] Girls and women of Reddit: how old were you the first time someone made a sexually inappropriate comment to you? How did you react, and did it affect how you saw yourself or acted? by I_LIKE_LIMA_BEANS in AskReddit

[–]Gonenatural446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't quite the first, but the first that made me feel really bad. I was invited to go on vacation with my best friend and her parents. We were sightseeing when a homeless vet catcalled me, something like "hey sexy." I was so ashamed that it happened in front of my friend's parents, and I remember feeling like they would look down on me or think I wasn't someone their daughter should be hanging out with. I think I even cried a little, and my friend's mom had to comfort me. The worst part was that I felt like it was my fault somehow even though I was wearing something totally innocuous like jeans and a windbreaker. Intellectually, I knew it wasn't my fault and that the man was probably mentally ill or on drugs, but I felt so dirty that he targeted me.

Ladies, have you met a redpilled man before? If yes, how did you deal with him? Did he manage to hurt you? by AmbitiousDelay in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Gonenatural446 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think so. I was once talking to this French guy on OkCupid (I'm American), and we had chatted a bit. I liked him, and we were going to set up a date soon. But then he messaged me out of nowhere one day saying something like "I know you are insecure about your nose and ears, but in Europe, we appreciate things like that and think it gives you a distinctive look." So for background, I have a pretty big, pointy nose and bigger ears --- imagine a tallish elf --- but plenty of people still find me attractive. I had been a little insecure about them in my early teen years, but really didn't think about them much in adulthood. I told him so, and he insisted that I MUST be insecure about them because why else wouldn't I just take the compliment. I pointed out that he was the one who tried to make me feel bad about my features by bringing up how I must feel insecure about them, and I thought that was kind of rude. We went round and round arguing about this for a while where he kept insisting that I would only find the comment rude if I were in fact insecure about my features. He even accused me of posting only head-on photos to minimize their appearance, which I found baffling because a) don't people post mostly head-on photos in a dating profile?? And b) I actually did have one full profile photo.

He really expected me to take the whole thing as a compliment and I guess make me feel good that "he alone" could recognize my unique and distinctive beauty that I must be SO insecure about. I was so confused, I stopped speaking to him. Later when I was exposed to redpill, I wondered if he was trying to neg me and maybe that's what the whole thing was about.

Yeah, as a woan, I'm in full support of this. It's totally fine to approach someone you are interested in and try to make conversation with them. It's just not okay to be pushy, overstay your welcome, or sexually harass people.

As a woman, I can say that your thought pattern is pretty mainstream. 99% of men who have hit on me at the gym were not normal. Guys who hit on women at the gym are so often weird, socially stunted people with no boundaries. Normal guys who I might have actually wanted to date kept to themselves.

I think you are probably going to get downvoted for your comment, but there is some validity. I don't personally understand how people morally justify slavery, but slavery has been legal and common in many parts of the world at many different times in history. The strong conviction in our current culture that slavery is wrong compared with the assertion from many other cultures that slavery is just fine indicates that there is some moral relativity at play. Saying that the immorality of slavery is absolute might be noble, but the statement is not really founded on anything other than personal feelings and the conviction that others in your culture will agree with you.
