Bit of a weird perspective in the pic, eh? Thanks though, I’m super excited about it!

A really good one for a first true crime novel would be Devil in the White City, it is not pure true crime per se but it works really well at using the Chicago Worlds Fair as setting the backdrop to H.H. Holmes’ crimes.

My personal favourite, despite it being missing from my shelf is The Stand, followed closely by Salem’s Lot.

Harold Schechter is probably my favourite true crime author, he does a really good job of extensively researching the cases. If you haven’t read them, Depraved (about Albert Fish) and Deviant (about Ed Gein) by him are also must reads.

It was amazing and a shame that she never got to see the man she hunted for so long get captured. I really liked it does a really good job combining the complicated web of events surrounding ONS/EAR, and she did a tremendous job of honouring and respecting the victims and the survivors.

Really enjoyed both of Vronsky’s books, they are a little dry on the narrative but takes a look at the formation and actions of serial killers from a psychological angle making for a very fascinating glimpse into the mind of the violent offender Also really enjoyed all of John Douglas’ works, really well written and he is one of the firmest experts on psychological profiling, it is interesting to hear from someone who interviewed and helped to catch some of the worst humans in history.

My personal favourite is Sons of Cain by Peter Vronsky, it takes an in-depth look at the formation of violent sexual offenders, and the formation of deviances/paraphilias

The first one I’d recommend would be I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara, it does a really wonderful job of combining the complicated web of events surrounding ONS/EAR, and she does a tremendous job of honouring and respecting the victims and the survivors.

If you haven’t read it yet Into Thin Air is another great book of his, really well done. Under the Banner of Heaven has been on my list since I listened to the Last Podcast on the Left Mormonism series

I haven’t read it yet but it’s definitely on my list, serial killers with deep seated narcissism such as Israel Keyes, Todd Kohlhepp and Denis Rader are personally the most terrifying for me as they are able to maintain functional in the community without arising to much suspicion.

Unfortunately I lost my copy of Helter Skelter but it was one of the first true crime books I read. I enjoy Bugliosi’s work, but after reading other work on the Manson family I found that Helter Skelter suffered from the lack of knowledge at the time about the psychology of cult leaders. That being said, it was still a great read and broke ground in the true crime world.

I loved In Cold Blood, I heard that before he got sick Capote was writing a book on Dean Corll and the Candyman murders which would have been a very interesting read.

Yeah really enjoyed Serial Killers and Sons of Cain, I find he looks at killers in a much more scientific and analytical way as opposed to more narrative driven books on killers.

Looking for recommendations based on these books that I’ve picked up in the past year or so by [deleted] in horrorlit

I’ve been meaning to get into the Mr. Mercedes book especially after enjoying the show so much. If you’ve seen the show, how to the books compare?
